As a recruiter, I often encounter job seekers who have highly specific parameters in mind for a new role. They might demand a role in a specific location (“Michael, I only want to work in the financial district”) or have very specific salary and benefit requirements in mind. Often, these days, they have their sights set on flexible or remote work, and don’t want to diverge from these aspirations. But I always council job seekers to go into the hunt with an open mind. For one thing, there might be a job out there that would actually be worth compromising the values you think you hold dear. And, more importantly, coming to a job interview process with such hard boundaries is not always a good look. Even if you know you’re not going to settle for anything else, those conversations come later. You role, for now, is to present your attributes to potential hiring managers and sell yourself. Once you have sold yourself, you’ll have value to leverage.

There might be a job out there worth compromising the values you think you hold dear. More importantly, entering a job interview with rigid boundaries is not always a good look. Even if you know you’re not going to settle for anything else, those conversations come later. Your role for now is to present your attributes to potential hiring managers and sell yourself. Once you have sold yourself, you’ll have value to leverage. If you are looking for a new role or considering looking for a new role, you should make time to build a relationship with a recruiter. This doesn't mean sending them your resume, salary expectations, and a general description of what you're looking for then expecting options to be presented to you within a few days. It means → Taking time to understand each other professionally and personally. → Time blocking for phone calls and building rapport. → Understanding the leg work your recruiter is going to do to help you find the next best role. → Agreeing on availability for follow-up calls with your recruiter. → Being highly responsive via text/email/phone. Because candidates I have built that relationship with are the candidates I prioritise putting my foot on the pedal to help them get a new role. I know they're serious, engaged and will interview for the roles I bring to them I know exactly what they are looking for and only reach out to best-suited companies for them And I can confidently talk to hiring managers about them as though they're my friends, which puts them in the strongest position to get a shot at the job If you don't make time for recruiters- your job search will take 10x longer and there are other people who will be a higher priority

Whilst working in recruitment, there is probably only one word, I dislike hearing again and again and its REDUNDANCY. 😖 I don’t think people talk enough about how it affects them and how do you keep functioning in these situations. 🧐Either it’s a voluntary redundancy or non-voluntary redundancy it makes a huge impact on your self-worth and confidence as a job seeker or simply someone who is looking for a new challenge. I find that candidates very often get desperate and applying for every possible role within the local area trying to find something immediately. 🫠Just a little reminder: job search takes time, interviewing process takes time and decision making takes time. So why would you be so quick applying for anything when all of these other processes take time. Remind yourself that you are the prize one of the businesses out there wants, so why would you sell yourself short? ✅ Be selective of what job you would like to apply for, don’t forget to adjust the CV accordingly ✅ Keep track of the roles you have applied for ✅ Save the consultant names on your phone to avoid confusion of who you are speaking to or the role they are representing, it also shows how committed or professional you are when committing to the role ✅ Be selective of how many recruiters you would like to work with, same as clients, you probably want to select around 3 consultants to work with to avoid other 3 selling you the exact same job 💡The whole process can be daunting, but it can also be eye opening. ✅Change your perception and the way you look at things. ✅Whilst looking for the role pick up new hobby. ✅Use the time to spend quality time with your family. ✅Find new ways of self-development. Focus on things that can happen and be consistent. When one door closes the other opens.
