🚀 SUMMARY OF THE 2018 RESOURCES AND WASTE STRATEGY REVIEW CIWM has initiated a comprehensive review of the 2018 Resources and Waste Strategy (R&WS). Here are the key takeaways: 🍃 Fresh Approach Needed The R&WS has been implemented slowly over the past five years, and many policies are pending. Acknowledging the changing context, CIWM emphasises the need for a fresh approach that prioritises resource resilience. 🚨New Strategy Needed CIWM advocates for a Resource Resilience Strategy that integrates essential policies to keep resources in economic use and mitigate climate change. This includes a focus on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and eco-design. 📊 Policy Progress Needed Only a few of the original proposals have been fully implemented. CIWM has identified eight fully implemented, 21 partially implemented, and ten still in the early stages. CIWM is committed to collaborating with policymakers to drive meaningful change and achieve a resource-resilient UK. Check out the full report in the comments: #WasteManagement #Recycling

Growing pressure on resources like water, food, and critical minerals leaves our environment and society vulnerable. Reducing that pressure means optimizing the way we use natural resources. Practices such as sustainable agriculture, waste reduction, efficient water management, and investments in green infrastructure can help protect these resources and the environment. Alongside this, embracing the principles of the circular economy for reuse, recycle and remanufacture is a key step toward creating a sustainable future. Best practice frameworks and guidance are important for organizations of any size, region or sector to progress to more sustainable operations, and help build a resource secure world. The EU Waste Hierarchy clearly points to waste prevention and preparation for re-use as activities with the most positive spillover effects. 🔄 Staying true to this hierarchy can guide policy-making toward synergies between environmental and other policy areas that can create a more resilient and sustainable economy marked by reduced resource use. 📉 🌍 💡 This is directly tied to the EU’s strategic autonomy, competitiveness and climate goals. Yesterday the Australian Government announced the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water would receive $23.0 million in 2024-25 to continue delivering the government's circular economy policy, program, and legislative functions. We desperately need a national framework and federal regulation - so this is a good start 👏 The big question I’ll be unpacking today at Coffs Waste Conference will be, “Has the 2024-25 Federal Budget gone far to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and transitioning to a more circular and low carbon economy?” Looking forward to chatting to industry as well as state and local government leaders about how Budget measures to increase circularity and reduce carbon emissions.
