We use our knowledge and convening power to strengthen water governance for a just, prosperous, and sustainable future
Om oss
SIWI is a water institute. We focus on a range of research and development topics within and around water that support decision-makers world. We believe that the best way to tackle water crises, and help bring about lasting change, is to strengthen water governance among public and private actors alike. SIWI’s strong, international team of knowledge-generators, convenors, facilitators, and trainers works to strengthen the systems and processes that govern access to and protection of fresh water, with the overarching aim to contribute to poverty eradication. SIWI also hosts several flagship programmes, including the UNDP-SIWI Water Governance Facility, the International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC), the Action Platform for Source-to-Sea Management (S2S Platform), and the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA). Through the Swedish Water House, we connect Swedish water stakeholders with each other and to international processes. This year at #COP27, we are proud to be a partner of the Water Pavilion, mobilising to put water at the heart of climate action. #Water4Climate

Ahead of #COP29, SIWI's Danielle Gaillard-Picher shares reflections on why involving women in #climate strategies holds the key to a more resilient and sustainable future. "No, #ClimateChange certainly does not affect everyone equally: although we may be going through the same storm, some are riding on ocean liners while others are equipped only with life rafts. In the same way, climate change is felt more acutely by those who are already vulnerable or marginalized." writes Dani.

Plastic pollution in #freshwater and the #ocean poses severe risks to marine wildlife, coastal ecosystems, human health, and livelihoods. Monitoring and assessing transboundary #PlasticPollution is essential for identifying sources, understanding impacts, and guiding coordinated, data-driven strategies to reduce plastic pollution in rivers and oceans. Join the webinar organized by UN Environment Programme and #SIWI. 📆 Tuesday 12 November 🕑 09:00 – 10:30 (CET) / 15:00 – 16:30 (UTC+7) 📝 REGISTER: https://bit.ly/3YApVla The discussion will focus on how the source-to-sea approach can help: 🔎 Assessing and monitoring transboundary plastic pollution in rivers 🌅 Developing plastic management solutions for transboundary pollution Find out more on how #SourceToSea management enhances these efforts by emphasizing the connections between land, freshwater systems, coasts, and the ocean. 🗨️ SPEAKERS: Sayako Ono & Mushtaq Memon (UNEP), Ruth Mathews, Dana Dedeck & Jose Pablo Murillo (SIWI), Joana M. Water and climate change mitigation are by essence interconnected. Therefor, we must address the two with integrated approaches. In 2022, SIWI published a landmark report on the role of #freshwater in climate mitigation. As lead authors of Chapter 9, Anna Tengberg, from SIWI, and Thérèse Rudebeck, from WaterAid, explain the importance of breaking the silos and offer concrete examples on how to recognize the systemic and connected nature of climate and water. 💬Read Anna's and Therese's interview ▶️ https://lnkd.in/d6nmdXQJ 📄 Check out the full report ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dzWqSNdx

As we prepare for water and climate discussions at the UNFCCC COP29 starting next week, we’re taking a moment to look back at the #Water4Climate Pavilion sessions from COP28. Adaptive water planning and management are crucial to help countries build climate resilient societies. The Water for Climate Pavilion brings together stakeholders across different sectors, including government, international organisations, NGOS and private sector, to promote dialogue and explore water as a tool for driving climate action. As part of the Water Pavilion’s Steering Committee, the Australian Water Partnership supported a series of events focusing on the interplay between water and climate, essential to promote future water security and sustainable water use practices. There is today increasing evidence that the delivery of #WASH services is a major contributor to #GHG emissions. Yet, this aspect is often overlooked in #climate strategies. 🚰 In this quick interview, Ricard Giné explains how mitigation solutions must span the whole water supply and sanitation chain. Ricard led Chapter 4 of SIWI's landmark report "The Essential Drop to Net-Zero" that illustrates how reducing GHG emissions in WASH management is critical for climate change mitigation. 💬Read Ricard's interview ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dYUsVBUk 📄 Check out the full report ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dzWqSNdx
