HOPE - Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences recently shared a post showcasing HOPE Champion Roger Sherman sharing the HOPE Framework with a group of parents while he comforted a baby. You can see the post here: https://shorturl.at/jwBM0 This post got me thinking about the kinds of reactions I typically see in public when a child is distressed and needs comfort. I can think of many examples of folks grumbling, sometimes loudly, about the baby crying on the airplane or the child bawling on the floor at the mall. Instead of seeing a distressed child in need of comfort, or an overwhelmed parent in need of support, they see an opportunity to criticize a stranger's "poor parenting skills". What if we replaced reactions of shame/blame with reactions of curiosity and compassion? What if we looked for ways to model the Four Building Blocks of HOPE* in the way we chose to respond to distressed children and overwhelmed parents? What we might see? - We might ASK the parents if they could use a hand. A simple offer of support to parents can help them feel supported instead of judged, which by itself could enable the parent to rally and re-approach their distressed child with renewed energy. This also provides an example to parents that encourages them to view asking for and receiving help with parenting as safe and productive. The Rugged Individualism that American culture is organized around discourages us from asking for outside help, especially in the personal area of raising children. By providing assistance to a parent in need of support, we directly communicate to them that help is available from their community, as well as counteract the shame that we often feel when asking for help. Considering the Four Building Blocks of HOPE, this best supports the building block of Relationships by teaching parents that they can engage in relationship with their community members to receive support in parenting. - We might INTERACT with the distressed child. We could ask about what is upsetting them or distract them with something entertaining. This could help the child refocus on something other than the triggering event, which can help the child begin to calm down. This type of engagement is part of how children learn to self-regulate, which makes this a perfect example of supporting Emotional Growth, one of the Four Building Blocks of HOPE. - We might ENCOURAGE our own children, if they are present, to interact with the distressed child. Children develop self-awareness and self-regulation from interactions with other children. Like the examples above, this strategy could support the Emotional Growth and the Relationship Building Blocks of HOPE. These examples show that there are many opportunities to promote the Four Building Blocks of HOPE. As community members, we ALL have a role to play in supporting Positive Childhood Experiences. *Unfamiliar with the Four Building Blocks of HOPE? Read more about them here: https://shorturl.at/nCKT8

#EngagedLibraries evolve to meet community needs. 💡 The Brooklyn Public Library - Sunset Park branch is one of its most popular in terms of attendance but was in desperate need of repair. With longstanding hopes of an expansion and the prospect of an expensive renovation, library and city officials decided to build a new library with a unique feature—seven floors of low-income housing above the library. The design not only saved the city money by combining two projects into one, but it also offered more space to meet user demand and brought needed housing and library services directly to those who needed it most. 📲 We want to know how your library has adjusted plans to solve community challenges. Share your story on social media and include #EngagedLibraries in your post. You could be featured in an upcoming issue of Abstracts, on our community engagement hub, in an upcoming blog or video, or across our social media channels. ⤵️ Click below to read Fast Company’s article on the Sunset Park project. --- #OCLC Brooklyn Public Library #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibrarianLife #LibraryLove

The skyrocketing evictions occurring nationwide are having an impact on people and their beloved pets. Overflowing animal shelters have also become a national crisis. The dip in adoptions along with the rise in dog intake from unclaimed strays and owner surrenders is a complete 180 from the surge in adoptions of dogs and cats we saw during the pandemic. According to Shelter Animals Count (SAC), stray dogs taken in by shelters have risen 6% in the January to November 2023 period compared to 2022 and are up a whopping 22% since 2021! 🧬🌍♻️🌿Enhancing Biological Value for Enterprises🪴Green Skilks for Businesses📈 Bringing people together for the right causes.
Reflecting on this post about suburban planning and its impacts, I see a troubling reality still present in #Italy today. It's surprising that even São Paulo, Brazil, sometimes offers more walkable environments than the charming small villages of a top European travel destination. The space given to cars and their drivers often overshadows the proven value of walkability and urban safety. The state of public transportation also offers incredible opportunities for improvement, investment, innovation, and, why not, even profit. Speaking of profit, local authorities are missing a minefield of revenue by not charging (and thus educating) drivers for not respecting speed limits. You would be amazed at how much behavior changes when law-breaking has financial consequences. This situation shows the urgent need for better urban planning, compliance, and regulatory frameworks that prioritize pedestrian safety and environmental sustainability. As a professional committed to enhancing environments through regulatory and environmental solutions, I advocate for policies that ensure safer, more walkable communities. Our climate is also changing because most communities are not allowed to choose the simple right to walk over taking a car. Would you not choose to walk, ride a bike, or take decent public transport if it were available to you? I think most of us would say YES. #UrbanPlanning #Sustainability #EnvironmentalRegulation #Walkability #Compliance #Citizenship #Biology #Reflections #Traffic #PublicTransport #Italy
Door-to-door school bus routes, two-car families and chauffeured children did not become common because people preferred them. They were the costly consequence of decades of planning that presumed falsely that everyone drives a car. Children kept walking to school even as rapid suburbanization made the walks long and unsafe. Meanwhile planners designed new suburbs as if everyone drives. Their plans often omitted sidewalks; sometimes planners were not permitted to commit road funds to sidewalk projects. In the era of the one-car suburban home in which the man typically monopolized the car, such plans often ignored both schoolchildren and their mothers, exposing children to lethal danger. In 1964, six-year-old Carloyn Behrens was killed on a sidewalkless suburban road in suburban St. Louis County. Her story stood for countless others like it.
