Type in use - Maiola for the 100PY exhibition /// (From our archives) In 2018, to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Czechoslovakia, a unique exhibit was organized to bring the country’s history closer to people. The exhibition, titled '100py' [a play on words in Czech meaning 'footprints'] told the story of the country through five generations of the fictitious Němcova family from the Czech city of Pilsen. Subtitled ‘One hundred years of the Republic as seen by five generations,’ the exhibition made extensive use of our Maiola typeface. Visitors were able to walk through the exhibition at the DEPO2015 culture hub in Pilsen, look at period objects and think about the dilemmas that five generations of the family had to solve. ”It's actually three exhibitions in one,” said exhibition curator Jiří Sulženko. Maiola, designed by Veronika Burian, was selected as the main typeface of the event visual material. It was seen on the brand, the signage, and exhibition. Maiola is a contemporary typeface that is mindful of its heritage. It is intended for high-quality printed text and thus handles its expressive tendencies with care to equalise the important issues of legibility and personality. Digital Photograph ＜Behind Closed Doors＞ received the 2nd prize 08 National Geographic International Photo Competition and Bronze Award from the HKDA Asia Design Awards 09. *** Behind Closed Doors is a photo series documenting the lives and living conditions of people living in squats in Hong Kong. This series covers around 50 households; among them, ten pictures were chosen for a competition. The series was shot between March and May 2008 in the Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, which consists of the remaining squats that have not yet been redeveloped. The clearance of this estate is planned to proceed in January 2009, symbolizing the last phase of the redevelopment of public housing estates. In the 1960s and 1970s, households used to keep their front doors open for better ventilation and to foster closer relationships among neighbors. Nowadays, people mostly keep their doors shut, which greatly alienates relationships among neighbors. Behind Closed Doors aims to explore how people in squats live by stepping into their homes. It also presents the audience with the issue of how squat residents perceive the intrusion of outsiders and foreign environments. #photography #culture #art

New Online Exhibition: 6 Drawings https://lnkd.in/dU3V9Gj3 Roger Kausch Drawing Series „Malpais“ (No 5), 2017 COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: Germany Colored pencil on paper 38 x 28 cm The series ‘Malpais’ (Bad Land) consists of color pencil drawings and presents a view on an abandoned cultural landscape that is hard to cultivate, from which emigration has taken place for centuries, which claims back nature in its beauty, and which increasingly covers over the traces of human activity. This is an environment that drives people far away unable to nourish them, steeping their love of their homeland in bitterness and helpless anger. The expressive aspect of these sheets, their portrait format and their development and dissemination of an archive-like store of signs combine not least to formulate a reflection on possible strategies within and the canonization of the genre of landscape painting, such as performed by the Chinese ‘Mustard Seed Garden’.

Hygromechanical study of a 16th century painted wooden panel: In-situ experiments to quantify the mechanical effect of the frame and the cradle. Journal of Cultural Heritage / October 2023 A B S T R A C T In order to prevent damage to painted wooden panels from the cultural heritage sector, curators and conservators must provide the hygroscopic and thermal conditions necessary for their conservation. Furthermore, the design of physical reinforcements such as frames or cradles has to be considered. In this paper, experiments were designed to determine the kinematic response of a painting to hygrometric variations both before and after remedial conservation treatments were undertaken. This study was carried out in the Fabre Museum, Montpellier on the panel painting “La Sainte Trinité couronnant la Vierge” (« The Coronation of the Virgin by the Holy Trinity »), which was placed in a climate-controlled showcase in a museum exhibition space. A glass panel on either side allowed visitors to see both sides of the panel during the experiment. At the same time, two stereoscopic devices allowed us to follow the relief, the shape deformation and surface strain of the panel on its front and back sides. First, the mechanical effect of the frame and cradle was studied. The majority of the deformation was found to be due to the cradle; initially the panel had a complex warp (-5 to 10 mm), decreasing to (-1 to +2 mm) when the cradle was removed. The continuous monitoring (two images per hour) was carrried out to assess the behaviour of the panel during imposed relative humidity (RH) variations of about 13 % RH (between 65 % RH for the maximum and 52 % RH for the minimum) for both the absorption and desorption phases.

Usually, a lot of wood and plastic is involved. The transport box is produced for that unique painting in order to prevent damages within transportation. As we are talking about expensive pieces of art and (sometimes) national heritage, safety of goes first. After being used the wooden transport box is usually thrown away after one transport. Today a new system offers adjustable boxes for the paintings, and can be used up to 50 times, and saves not only material, waste but also efforts during the whole packaging process.
