This past Saturday, the Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program hosted a successful Field Assistant Volunteer Workshop. We're excited to welcome 11 new citizen scientists who will be helping to collect data on bottlenose dolphins during boat-based surveys in Galveston Bay! Welcome to the team! 👋 If you are interested in helping with our dolphin research, consider joining us this weekend for our Seawolf Dolphin Station training workshop. There are still a few spots left! The deadline to register is this Wednesday, 6/19 at 5 pm. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/g6WkJzAW The GDRP is a partnership between the Galveston Bay Foundation and the EIH-UHCL – together we study the ecology, behavior, and health of Galveston Bay dolphins.

Members of the EnerGeo Alliance believe in the coexistence of seismic surveys and marine ecosystems. #Seismic surveys are not harmful to marine life populations and are needed to continue #MakingEnergyPossible for everyone around the world. ⏱ Timing: EnerGeo Alliance members work closely with marine biologists to mitigate encounters by timing surveys to avoid important events like breeding seasons and migrations. 👀 Onboard Guardians: Every seismic survey is accompanied by trained Marine Mammal Observers and Protected Species Observers. Their job? To vigilantly monitor and protect our marine counterparts, ensuring we operate in harmony with their habitat. 🚫 Safe Zones: Areas of concern are strictly off limits for testing, remaining untouched and off-limits, safeguarding vital marine habitats. Great read ! illegal construction is one of the biggest problems. There should be more emphasis on urban planning and sustainable development. How can we contribute from our individual level ? - Stay informed about local environmental laws and regulations. - Be aware of ongoing development projects in your community. - Raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats among your neighbors, friends, and community. - Engage in discussions and advocate for sustainable development practices. Report Violations: - Report any illegal construction or habitat destruction to local authorities, such as municipal bodies, environmental agencies, or forest departments. - Use local helplines or online platforms established for reporting environmental violations. - Attend local government meetings and voice your concerns about unauthorized construction or development projects. - Establish connections with local authorities responsible for environmental protection. Support Environmental NGOs: - Volunteer or support local environmental NGOs that work towards habitat preservation and wildlife conservation. Did you know there are Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) off the coast of Scotland that include ancient underwater volcanos? One of these is the Hebrides Terrace Seamount, the remnant of a volcano that is thought to have been formed around the time of the dinosaur’s extinction. It is one of three MPAs which descend from the top of the Hebridean continental slope (150m deep) down into the huge Rockall Trough (>2300m deep). The interaction of ocean currents with the continental shelf result in upwelling of nutrient dense waters to the surface, spurring on high biological productivity. Fields of the fragile, but largest single-celled animal known to science, called a xenophyophore, have also been found in abundance in the area! Watch this video to see more of the amazing creatures found in the MPAs on the Hebridean slope: https://lnkd.in/e4YRmUaA You can learn more about the MPA and JNCC’s work at https://bit.ly/3zebOJD

Leopards occur in so many different parts of the world and under many different conditions, so assessing their global conservation status is complicated. In Namibia, they are Vulnerable, based on population estimates using camera traps. https://lnkd.in/dnhmEKdv
Leopards are the ultimate survivors. Can they endure these growing challenges?

I love seeing an RPS Protected Species Observer featured! And this is such a great photo, one taken during the Vineyard Wind installation, with so many things to appreciate happening here: the look of concentration, full PPE, all the equipment on hand... Magic! #protectedspeciesobservers #onwatch #offshorewind #rpsenergy #tetratech
Photo from the Field: Our Protected Species Observer stood watch on a ship deck with big binoculars and a marine mammal identification guide to identify and record the presence of protected species in U.S. waters. This crucial work will support a #RenewableEnergy project in minimizing potential impact on marine life.

Amazing insights on shark behavior from an activity tag on a shark that was subsequently hit by a boat. Great example of new biodiversity monitoring methods that are transforming how we sense the natural world. I write about the need for monitoring & the potential of new methods in the Irish times Soundscapes of the natural world can tell us so much https://lnkd.in/ejxVZCt7 New tech is just part of the solution for a national biodiversity monitoring programme - loads of monitoring goes on as part of Environmental Impact Assessments & subsequent planning conditions but it goes nowhere. The data are not accessible & not used to trigger action.

Getting Marine Protected Areas right for large, mobile animals like #sharks #rays #whales #turtles #tuna is challenging but essential. Because the ocean is changing even faster than science predicted it would, #MPAs need to be assessed and effective today, not 10 years from now. Join us tomorrow where we’ll discuss these challenges but also solutions!
