The members of the next European Parliament will make decisions that will affect millions of people inside and outside the EU. They might take actions that protect social cohesion, free speech, and independent media; that prioritise human rights, equality, and solidarity over economic interests. But they can also go the other way. That's why we take this #EUElection so seriously. Don't let history repeat itself. Protect the future by learning from the past. On May 4th, the Coordination Body of the Alliance for Freedom of Expression in Iraq (AFEI), sponsored by the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights (IOHR), convened a meeting to address the escalating political movement aimed at hastily passing the Freedom of Expression and Peaceful Demonstration law. The meeting aimed to unite the efforts against the enactment of this law due to its potential restrictions on freedom. This gathering served as a continuation of previous meetings held with members of Parliament and various political factions. The objective was to engage decision-makers and convey the demands of Iraqi civil society regarding the draft law. About AFEI: AEFI is an alliance sponsored by the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights (IOHR), comprising non-governmental organizations, unions, activists, politicians, parliament members, and social movements. Its primary objective is to defend the freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Iraqi Constitution, and prevent any attempts to undermine it. 🌍 Supporting National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) is a priority for UNDP in Europe and Central Asia, especially as they navigate the complexities of crises in the region – from the decline in the rule of law and ongoing conflicts to mass displacement, environmental challenges, and increasing inequality and polarization. 🤝 We're honored to collaborate with partners like United Nations Human Rights, European Network of National Human Rights Institutions, and Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions in this effort. In 2023, this partnership led to joint capacity assessments of the NHRIs in #Ukraine, #Kazakhstan, and #Turkmenistan. These assessments, conducted through field missions, were meant to help the NHRIs identify their capacity gaps and formulate strategies to meet international standards, including the Paris Principles. 🔜 In 2024, we are excited to continue this momentum. We're focusing on partnership projects we've initiated with the NHRIs of #moldova, #georgia , and #northmacedonia . Our journey towards strengthening human rights and institutional capacities goes on! #undp #humanrights75 #partnership #sdg16 #ruleoflaw GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions) Matthias K. To support the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights to promote and protect #HumanRights during the ongoing war against Ukraine, ENNHRI, UNDP and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights conducted a capacity assessment of the institution. Its findings and recommendations will underpin further capacity development and structured follow-up by the Ukrainian #NHRI, providing a pathway for it to continue its work promoting and protecting human rights in the context of an armed conflict. The capacity assessment team included Alyson Kilpatrick, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, and the UNDP teams for Ukraine and Eurasia.
