  • How can the EU raise its game on artificial intelligence (AI)? How can AI make workplaces more productive and engaging? These were key questions discussed at our workshop on AI at Work and Algorithmic Management on 28 January. Roxana Minzatu, European Commission Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs and Preparedness, highlighted that algorithms in the workplace can boost efficiency but also raise risks, be subject to bias, lack transparency, or undermine workers’ trust. Therefore, “we must ensure AI is ethical and human-centric, especially when AI is used to manage people”. Our Director General, Markus J. Beyrer, spoke about the transformative potential of AI: “AI can boost competitiveness, productivity, innovation, scientific progress, the green transition, and improvements in working conditions.” He underscored the urgency of investment, legal certainty, better public-private partnerships and training and education to unlock AI’s full potential - especially given Europe’s labour and skills shortages. Mikael Vetterskog, CEO of Fårbo Mekaniska, shared his company’s experience with AI. He noted that while there was a learning curve, implementing AI in areas such as production processes, administration, and certification applications led to increased productivity and greater job satisfaction for workers at his company. A big thank you to all our speakers and the industry experts who participated in the World Café session, sharing hands-on examples of AI in action. Your insights made this event a success!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure together with Markus Beyrer of meeting the Executive Vice President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition Teresa Ribera to discuss how we can strengthening Europe’s economy. We focused on the crucial role of the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal to urgently; ⚡️Reduce the energy cost gap with global competitors, 🔃 Speed up permitting procedures, and 📚Cut regulatory burdens on European companies I emphasized the urgent need for a bold signal from the EU, prioritizing regulatory burden reduction for businesses operating in Europe. As part of this effort, I was proud to present and hand over BusinessEurope’s recently published paper containing 68 concrete proposals across 11 areas to address the most pressing regulatory burdens on companies in 2025. BusinessEurope is committed to present concrete action that will help improve the competitiveness of Europe and it’s business and industry. Why? Because Europe’s economic success is everyone’s business! https://lnkd.in/dXG-GVTF

  • How can the EU reduce regulatory burden on companies?   We propose 68 actions to be implemented this year!   60% of companies see regulatory burdens as a major obstacle to investment, and 55% of SMEs say that red tape is their greatest challenge. We welcome the EU institutions’ renewed focus on competitiveness and the reduction of regulatory burdens. In particular, we support the "Omnibus" approach to streamlining EU legislation on reporting requirements, due to be presented in February. We are optimistic that this will pave the way for a series of similar, impactful measures. However, the regulatory challenges facing EU businesses extend far beyond reporting obligations. This is why we are calling for an overall EU regulatory burden reduction target, with a dedicated programme to achieve it within clear deadlines. In our new paper “Reducing regulatory burden to restore the EU’s competitive edge“, we outline concrete proposals to reduce administrative burdens, excessive compliance costs and cross-border regulatory barriers in the Single Market. ➡️ Check out our proposals here: https://lnkd.in/dVG-aJWC Reducing red tape is not just a policy choice – it’s an economic imperative. #RegulatoryBurden

🤝 BusinessEurope is just back from a timely mission to China, where we had the opportunity to discuss our new paper on #EUChina relations with key stakeholders. Our delegation, including Director General Markus J Beyrer and Deputy DG Luisa Gradim Santos, engaged with high-level Chinese officials from the Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on the state of play of our bilateral relationship. BusinessEurope also held the annual dialogue with CCIEE - Chinese Centre for International Economic Exchanges - and met with the EU Delegation, the EU Chamber of Commerce in China and BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V.. Key 🗝️ messages highlighted during the mission: ➡️ China remains a crucial trade and investment partner for the EU. However, growing imbalances in the EU-China economic relationship must be addressed. ➡️ Unlike other partners, the EU uses trade defence tools in a WTO-compliant way and considering the overall EU interests when adopting measures. China should acknowledge this and follow a similar approach. ➡️ While China’s efforts to support economic growth are welcomed, greater focus on increasing domestic consumption is needed. ➡️ European companies do not want to decouple from China, but certain EU legislation, such as CSDDD, CSRD, and Forced Labour rules, will require more information and cooperation from Chinese suppliers. ➡️ Despite growing trade tensions, the EU and China should define a positive agenda for cooperation in areas of mutual interest including climate change, standardisation, pandemic prevention, and trade and investment. For deeper insights, read our paper on EU-China relations: https://lnkd.in/dJAqruGz.

💪✨ A strong and competitive economy is the foundation for Europe’s security. This was the central message from the EU business community to the incoming Polish EU Presidency during BusinessEurope’s Council of Presidents meeting in Warsaw. Hosted by our Polish member Konfederacja Lewiatan, the event brought together Presidents and Directors General from our member federations. Together, they discussed economic priorities with Polish leaders, including Andrzej Domański, CFA, Minister of Finance, Magdalena Sobkowiak, Undersecretary of State, and President Andrzej Duda. Sauli Niinistö, former President of Finland and special adviser to the President of the European Commission, presented his report on Europe’s civilian and military preparedness in a shifting global landscape. 📣 Our President Fredrik Persson emphasised:  "To remain an anchor of peace, prosperity, and stability, Europe must act decisively to strengthen its economy and close the widening competitiveness gap with major global players." We urge the EU to prioritise ten key actions during the Polish Presidency, starting with: ✔️ Defining an ambitious Single Market strategy by mid-2025  ✔️ Proposing a new clean industrial deal to reduce regulatory burdens on companies, accelerate permitting, reduce energy costs, and address labour and skills shortages ✔️ Diversifying trade to boost resilience in an evolving geopolitical landscape 📜 Learn more in our #COPRES declaration: https://shorturl.at/lMjDB

I had the pleasure and privilege to meet with António Costa, President-elect of the Council of the European Union to discuss BusinessEurope ’s priorities for the new political cycle. All the legislative EU institutions in Brussels should be aware of the urgency to put in place policies that will improve the investment conditions in Europe. In light of the elections in USA, we also shared our expectations on the EU-US relations, emphasizing the critical importance of a strong transatlantic partnership. Additionally, we outlined BusinessEurope’s priorities on EU-India relations. Last but not least, as we are publishing today our paper on EU-China relations, I gave Mr Costa our main priorities regarding the future of this important economic relationship. Despite the challenges we want to build a positive agenda for engagement with China but China needs to be willing to seriously engage with the EU. You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/dRdjQm2n It was an excellent first exchange with president-elect Costa and we look forward to continuing the dialogue in the coming years, especially within the framework of the Tripartite Social Summit. This will be central in our joint effort to strengthening European competitiveness and to making the EU the place to do business, invest and innovate. #businesseurope #antoniocostas #eu
