It's #givingtuesday! One thing I've learned in my very long time (almost two months 😂) of working at a non-profit, is that from the outside, it's easy to get caught up in numbers. Especially coming from e-commerce and B2B tech spaces, we couldn't talk about success without mentioning ROI, conversion, the hundreds of other KPIs. Of course, non-profits have KPIs as well, but particularly behind human services organizations, each metric represents life and family that are forever transformed through the services and programs provided. There is a face behind it all. So, please donate today, even if you think it is a small amount, to organizations that make a difference. And if you are looking for ideas, consider these two organizations: Union Settlement A little self-promoting because this is where I work, but Union Settlement serves 10,000 people in East Harlem (about 10 percent of the community) every year. East Harlem is a neighborhood built by a diverse population, which unfortunately and too often means that access to resources is limited. Union Settlement provides services for every corner of East Harlem — from infants to grandparents, from established small businesses to those looking to build their careers — creating new possibilities for people every day. I was lucky enough to join them for their career day in the spring and see firsthand the positive impact they are making on their students. Today, Forte Prep is showcasing one example of that impact by investing in the arts. It is a tremendous honor to be a part of this effort. If you are not a member of the Nonprofit Executive Alliance but you are a business or nonprofit leader, or an elected official, and would like to participate, please let me know. Next month, in partnership with Broward County Government, the Coordinating Council of Broward, Nonprofit Executive Alliance, Community Foundation of Broward and the American Jewish Committee (AJC) we will be co-hosting three workshops on Anti-Semitism. These workshops are geared to nonprofit and business leaders as well as elected officials.  Not only is this issue deeply personal to me but Broward County has one of the largest populations of Jews in the world and it's one of the fastest growing populations in our community.  Antisemitism in America is rising, becoming more commonplace and more violent. Ranging from threatening Jewish people on the streets to a constant barrage of online hate—it impacts your staff, board, volunteers, those you serve, their families, and our entire community. Recognizing that antisemitism poses a threat to democracy, the White House recently released the U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, which adopts a “whole-of-society” approach to addressing antisemitism in America. Based on AJC’s comprehensive Call to Action Against Antisemitism, the National Strategy provides concrete examples of what businesses can do to stem the tide, such as including antisemitism awareness and training in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) curricula. It also calls on employers to educate andshare information about Jewish American heritage, culture, and history. American leadership—from public, private, and nonprofit sectors—has a critical role to play in fighting all forms of hatred, including antisemitism. That fight begins with understanding the problem, learning about the diversity of the Jewish community, and empowering people to speak out. Please reach out if you would like to learn more.
