Nine hundred thirty souls got together at the TxDOT 2023 PEPS Conference in Galveston Texas, where we, as Consultants, acknowledged concerns trends, and recommended practices to deliver projects in the TxDOT way. My favorite session was about Win-Win negotiations. Darren McDaniel, P.E. from the Transportation Program Division, stated that TxDOT wants quality work for a fair price, and the consultants seek clear expectations and reasonable profit. When we found this sweet spot during our negotiations, we reached a Win-Win deal. As a sound engineer, Darren provided an equation that allows us to evaluate the negotiation and determine how fair or one-sided the negotiation went. The main idea is that successful negotiations happen when both parties focus on reaching an agreement that benefits everyone involved. If both sides approach the negotiation with the right attitude, they can likely get a win-win outcome. What do you enjoy doing outside the office? "I enjoy spending time with my wife and 4 kids, exploring the outdoors, tinkering with DIY projects, and traveling." If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Why? "I would want to be able to teleport. I have a strong desire to explore and learn more about the world, but live a busy life with many obligations. I’d like to take a minute and reflect on the incredible impact that committee work has had and continues to have on the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA), and more so, the industry as a whole. Things are always changing and evolving. As a result, challenges, issues, unintentional consequences, whatever the case may be, an intentional look into the impacts are critical to forward progress. These committees exemplify the true spirit of collaboration. Whether it's addressing industry challenges, or shaping and re-tweaking specifications and policies, the work of these committees often goes quietly unnoticed by most people, yet the benefits are felt throughout the Commonwealth by all. The reality is that they are the heartbeat of progress and transformation. So…, a heartfelt thank you to the passionate individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to VTCA’s committees. Your commitment is the driving force behind the positive impact we as a group make in the transportation arena. I might add, interested in being a catalyst for change and contributing to the future of Virginia's transportation landscape? Explore VTCA’s committees, engage with peers in the industry, and be a part of keeping Virginia moving. There is important work yet to be done.
