A couple of weeks ago, I posted about an experiment where we had virtual chats for folks interested in learning more about the Quality Engineering Lead role at Auror before applying. Since that post, I’ve chatted with 20 QE practitioners and leaders across Aotearoa. One common theme in these chats is: how do I get into a people leadership role when I am already a senior QA/QE? Here are some of my thoughts on this: - It is hard to move into a leadership position in a different company when you aren’t already doing it. From a hiring manager's point of view, the risk involved in hiring someone with zero people management experience the chance to “try” it out and learn on the go, whilst also learning the domain and product of a new company and its ways of working is just too high. - You can learn some skills in people management, but your thinking and maturity are hard to teach. This includes thinking from a team perspective and viewing the team as a unit, not just focusing on yourself. It's great that you can implement a mobile automation framework from scratch, but as the lead of the team, I would love to hear how you enable others in the team to do that, not how you are the hero in the story. - From my personal experience, moving from senior to lead is easiest in a company where there are many opportunities and with a manager who has your back. This means joining as a senior to learn the domain but operating as a lead and using your influence to act like one. Make it known to your future manager that this is the path you want to take and gauge the opportunities in the company before joining. Are they planning to expand? What does the leadership structure look like? I find the experiment very valuable as I was able to encourage those who might not apply because they think they lack certain skills but are actually good candidates with the right maturity and thinking. However, I don’t think this is scalable, sadly, because there is only so much time in the day. We are now hiring for multiple Quality Assurance Engineer positions, so it’s time to do another experiment. Our amazing PX partner Jeanelle Ooi has this awesome idea, what if there is an open space where you can ask questions, meet the team, and find out more about working at Auror before applying? Like a virtual open day. Well, Auror is growing! We have a bunch of new roles within our Product and Engineering space. If you or anyone in your network has ever wondered what it’s like to work here, find out more about our open roles, or is curious about us in general, we will be opening our doors virtually to connect from the 24th of June to the 3rd of July! This virtual space is available and open to anyone. This is is an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes peek into our Kiwi tech company. I will see you there, and here is a link to sign up (https://lnkd.in/ghM8R3z4) And if I don't catch you virtually, our QE team is gonna be at NZTestingConf next week, so catch you there in person!

As part of our Engineering Culture excellence initiative, Ehsaan Technologies team had a Brag document session with Minhaj Khan during which he shared his experience and the significance of a Brag Document. A Brag Document is essentially a record where anyone can highlight key achievements from a week or a quarter, which can be effectively used during their 1:1 meetings with managers. The concept is grounded in the understanding that individuals, being human, may not remember every important accomplishment, and the same could be true for managers. This oversight may result in valuable contributions going unrewarded. Therefore, the idea is to create a not-so-boring and presentable document or slide-deck that can be shared not only with managers but with anyone on the team. While the content of a Brag Document is versatile and can contain can various achievements here are a few suggestions for what you can include: 1. Goals for this year. 2. Goals for the next year. 3. Projects. 4. Collaboration and mentorship. 5. Design and documentation. 6. Company building. 7. Lessons learned. 8. Outside-of-work activities. 9. General prompts. An interesting resource that I recently found for managing brag docs: https://lnkd.in/d4mj7uyN
