Here's how mass timber excels in column and beam structures: Post-and-beam systems: This classic approach utilizes columns positioned at regular intervals to support beams. Mass timber's inherent strength allows for wider column spacing compared to traditional wood, creating a more open and flexible floor plan. This is ideal for buildings like offices or large retail spaces where clear sightlines and expansive areas are desirable. Post-and-plate systems: This method takes advantage of large mass timber panels, like cross-laminated timber (CLT). These panels boast exceptional strength in both directions, allowing them to span across longer distances between columns. This eliminates the need for many beams, resulting in a cleaner aesthetic with flat ceilings. Post-and-plate systems are well-suited for residential construction or buildings with a focus on maximizing usable space. Not only is the Black & White Building making headlines as the tallest timber office tower in London, it’s also one of the most sustainable. The Office Group’s (TOG) new six-story workspace has officially opened its doors in Shoreditch, and it swaps traditional construction materials with beech, pine and spruce wood. Designed by the UK’s Waugh Thistleton Architects, this marks TOG’s first project out of 50 to be built from the ground up. While the foundation utilizes concrete, the rest of the framework is made up of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). TXD Commercial is more than just another roofing company. We pride ourselves in problem solving, innovative designs and helping our customers in a number of different ways. This was a reroof project. The original roof system was only 1.5” thick. The new system was just over 5” thick. These overflow scuppers ended up being barely above the new roof line and with them being directly above the windows, they needed a way to eliminate the possibility of water draining directly on the windows below.
