If we plowed up every pasture in an attempt to grow plant-based alternatives, we would lose that all-important soil cover which protects the topsoil, captures moisture and carbon, and reduces erosion. Plus, 70% of the world’s surface is not fit for farming or development anyway. It is either too rough, rocky, steep & arid and would become barren wastelands unless cattle grazed on them. Not too mention people deserve to have access to ALL types of foods, and to make the food choices for their families for themselves. Our goal as a nation should always be to offer MORE food choices, not less. Blaming livestock for GHG emissions will not address the pollution problems created by industrial farming. The number of bovines in the UK has remained more or less constant over the past 50 years. Increased production from the same number of animals is based on the fossil fuels and chemicals that create our environmental problems. The charts below illustrate how much milk yield variance there is within individual cows across their lactations, on eight different farms. Milk recording data can be all over the place throughout the lactation for some animals, whilst for others, their production fits neatly along a lactation curve. Built within Tracker is a system that models a lactation curve for each animal then determines the amount of variance the actual results delivered against the model. As seen in the eight farms below, some farms show a proportion of the herd in red. This denotes the yield was very inconsistent on a proportion of the herd. Other herds show the herd has very little variation and are firmly in the green. If consistency is king, then herds 6 and 7 display the potential. Herds 3 and 4 warrant some further investigation.
