Did you know that regenerative agriculture improves the nutritional value of our food? A study published in the Peer J Journal was conducted on 10 different farms from across the Midwest and the Eastern US and concluded that the crops grown on farms with regenerative farming practices had a healthier nutritional profile than those grown on conventional farms. Food grown with regenerative farming practices contained more magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins, B1, B12, C, E, and K. Regenerative organic agriculture is good for the planet, communities, and our health! To achieve sustainable and resilient food and nutrition security, we must innovate and adapt in the fields of Agriculture, food, and Health systems. Traditional farming methods often involve heavy use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. There was a common belief that Organic agriculture had lower productivity and couldn't sustain food demands, leading to the reliance on chemical fertilizers despite associated health risks. The dilemma presented was a choice between feeding the population with potential health hazards or risking future food shortages due to lower organic yields. However, insights from Brazilian experts (related to organic agriculture, which emphasizes organic fertilizer, zero tillage, and cover crops) suggest that it's feasible to increase productivity and meet food demands through Organic Agriculture practices. Furthermore, I've learned that ensuring optimal health and nutrition for people begins with the health of the soil and plants. Just like humans, plants also require adequate nutrition to thrive and support overall well-being.
