This is a fantastic discussion about AI in the legal profession from Scott Westfahl, who gives a compelling and honest breakdown and sparks thinking about (changing) systems. Scott suggests Gen AI is making the human aspects of the profession, like empathy, reflection, and curiosity, all the more important. A different take from many AI chats, and a take people need to hear!

"Use case, use case, use case" - the most important term in the lexicon of legal tech and knowledge management. I really love this article posted by Casetext, Part of Thomson Reuters because it addresses what every legal professional must first ask and keep front and centre about using new legal tech in the marketplace such as Thomson Reuters GenAI tools and products - so what are we really going to use this stuff for? I think if you read this Law.com survey with some thoughtfulness, regardless of jurisdiction or scale of your organization, you will find something that resonates as to how this technology can be helpful and used in your own environment. Whether its litigators' first draft of discovery/deposition questions or demand letters or transactional lawyers loading enormous documents within the tool and asking it to summarize it in basic terms, it's all about the use case. Results from a survey by Law.com of 41 Am Law 100 firms identified the 5 most common use cases currently being tested or deployed, with summarizing documents/generating transcripts leading use cases, followed closely by legal research. They are actually not that hard to find in your own work requirements if you give them a little thought too! #legaltechnology #legalai #genai

Rowena Rix, Head of Innovation and AI at Dentons, and a former litigator, recently brought her experience to bear at the Law Society Gazette's roundtable: Making AI Work for Law. While it's still early days for GenAI, there are some well-established AI use cases in the legal sector, such as the courts' acceptance of Technology Assisted Review (TAR) in litigation. This is useful experience to lean on when navigating new opportunities combining both 'classic' and GenAI to deliver meaningful solutions for clients.
