💡 Shining a Light on Financial Awareness Day! 💷 Today, on #FinancialAwarenessDay, we wanted to bring awareness to the difficulties care experienced young people and separated children (unaccompanied asylum seeking children) often face when trying to open a bank account. They may not have the correct forms of identification or the knowledge to plan in advance for the timescales ID can take to receive. We're proud to spotlight UK banks that have recognised these barriers and taken steps to provide alternative options for care leavers to open accounts: ✨🏦 Metro Bank (UK) Metro Bank has introduced a thoughtful solution for care experienced young people. Rather than requiring traditional photo ID, Metro Bank branches now accept an official letter from a social worker confirming the young person’s identity. To ensure authenticity, the branch contacts the social worker for verification. This service is available across all 78 branches. ✨🏦 Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society & NatWest While not having specific care experienced services, we've found success in helping young people with opening accounts at Lloyds, Nationwide, and NatWest. These banks accept a signed letter from a social worker containing essential details like name, DOB, address, and looked-after status. For those pursuing higher education, a confirmation letter from their college is also accepted. *** What happens when you have more technology than needed *** Cut from 180 to 60 Westpac, the Australian bank, is making a multibillion-dollar investment to simplify its technology infrastructure. As part of Project Unite, the bank will dedicate 30% of its budget, estimated to be between A$1.8bn to A$2bn, over the next four years to upgrading its tech. The goal is to reduce duplication and cut the number of systems by two-thirds, from 180 to 60. Improving customer outcomes, simplifying operations for bankers and reducing costs are the main priorities, rather than the replacement of core banking systems.
