🚨 Yesterday it was a big day for the deep sea at #ISA29 when Honduras, Tuvalu and Guatemala called for a precautionary pause on #DeepSeaMining, citing the need to protect ocean health and ensure social equilibrium. Now, 31 countries have voiced their support to protect the deep sea from irreversible destruction from deep-sea mining. We encourage more countries to join the wave of resistance! Since the initial discovery of diamonds in 1908 near Lüderitz, this regional composite placer deposit has yielded over 100 million carats of +95% gem quality stones. The SEG 2024 Field Trip offers a rare opportunity to travel through the relatively pristine coastal desert environment of the Sperrgebiet, focusing on the unique Namibian diamond mega-placer deposit. A combination of factors including climate and weather systems, crustal structure, timing, provenance, and drainage history combined to produce the mega-placer. In some areas today, unique and innovative mining methods are used to recover the diamonds. All of this will also be included. The ship, part of Portugal's ambitious seafaring expeditions, is believed to have been en route to India. Gerak Darma's team is visiting a second gold mine in Bir Moghrein, Tiris Zemmour Region, Mauritania. This mine is on a long, narrow vein. The miners have gone deep along the strike. It is astonishing how the miners go down the hole just by using some rocks as anchors with ropes. They are mining good-grade ores and still going past the 30-meter depth. We can see the footholes on the wall of the holes. The miners used these footholes before the hole became too deep. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world lying off the southeastern coast of Africa. Not only does Madagascar have plenty of unexplored mineral reserves, they have a rich history of mining a wide variety of gems including emeralds. The Mananjary region is one of the main emerald producing areas in Madagascar. Mining started in this area around the mid 1970s, first at Ambodibakoly. Several open pit mines were worked on from 1983 to around 1995, and produced several thousand kilograms of emerald of various sizes and quality. Beryl in Madagascar is one of the most important of the more than 50 minerals found in the island. Aquamarine and other beryls from Madagascar have been known in Europe since French occupation of the island in 1883. The emeralds were formed due to metasomatic processes related to the Pan-African tectonometamorphic event. Large emeralds were formed inside the pegmatites at the contact with the hosting basic rocks. Most promotional videos generated by mining companies just don't get their message across to the general public because they present things that are important to the company rather than the intended audience. Here is one for the Sukkary mine in Egypt that takes a different approach. Obviously it is designed for the modern culture of Egyptian society, but it has some key lessons that western mining industry could learn from. 1. It presents the orebody as a national treasue. 2. The people who work there are presented as heros (not the mining company). 3. They stress that the mine is not a burden on the state. 4. There is no virtue signalling which would instantly brand the video as green white or pink "washing". 5. It appeals to the "we can do this" national pride attitude. With 9300 views in two years, this video has clearly gained much more traction that most mining industry promotion videos in the western world. There is a lot to learn here.
