I’ve been very lucky and grateful to have received tremendous support from the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) throughout my PhD journey.
In 2023, I received the SEG student research grant through the Hugh McKinstry Fund for geochronology analyses of my PhD project. This grant, in collaboration with the Ocean Resources Research Center for Next Generation (ORCeNG) of Chiba Institute of Technology, enabled me to travel to Japan for Re-Os analysis (https://lnkd.in/ej-pEUra) and soon to Switzerland for U-Pb dating at ETH Zurich.
Later that year, my abstract was selected for a poster presentation at SEG 2023 in London, where I had my very first experience attending an SEG conference. This opportunity was made possible through a travel grant from SEG. Check out my abstract through this link https://lnkd.in/eYRbb8aC.
Fast forward to May 2024, I was incredibly fortunate to be selected for a highly competitive SEG student field trip to the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (São Francisco Craton) and Brasília Belt (Paracatu and Vazante districts) in Brazil. Alongside 16 brilliant young geologists from around the world, I learned under the guidance of amazing mentors: Douglas Kirwin, Chico Azevedo, Jon Coates, Lydia Lobato, Gustavo Henrique Coelho de Melo, and Roberto Perez Xavier. It was, without a doubt, one of the best field trip experiences I’ve ever had.
Just last week, I returned from SEG 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia, where I presented my latest research on vectoring in metamorphosed VMS deposits. To my surprise, my poster was recognized as one of the best in the category of ‘Vital High-Volume Base Metals’ among over 200 outstanding contributions. This experience was made possible by the travel grants from both SEG and IAGOD.
None of these experiences would have been possible without being a member of SEG. I highly encourage my friends and colleagues, especially those still pursuing their education, to consider joining SEG and take full advantage of the opportunities and support they offer.
A special thanks to my amazing supervisor, Steven Hollis, for his endless encouragement and support, making all these PhD-in-travel experiences possible! Also thanks to Black Raven Mining (Darryl Podmore) for sponsoring my PhD project.
