It might sound nice to be able to ‘live in a museum,’ but I’d rather prefer my daughters to grow up in a region that not only aligns with our values but is also lifting its full (and huge economic) potential, thriving and growing in an inspiring and inclusive way. Technology is increasingly shaping the prosperity and sovereignty of nations. However, large European corporations invested EUR 700 billion a year – or EUR 3,000 per capita – less than their US counterparts between 2015 and 2022, particularly in technology. If Europe continues like this, it will have its place as the ‘world’s largest open-air museum’ (as an esteemed colleague dubbed it), but not much more. My colleagues Solveigh Hieronimus, Massimo Giordano, Sven Smit, Peter Dahlstrom, Eric Hazan, Jan Mischke, Theodor Vendrig, Robert Kärrberg, Leandri van der Wat, Guillaume Dagorret, Marc de Jong, and Martin Wrulich have crafted a new paper in collaboration with the World Economic Forum that proposes a focus to drive timely action along three key axes: 1️⃣ Clear strategic decisions on where to play and how to win across technology domains: This includes rapidly scaling commercialization efforts, such as deploying public procurement funds to create new markets in nascent sectors of strength like quantum; pursuing leapfrogging and vertical niche strategies in areas where Europe faces significant challenges, like certain segments of the semiconductors industry; or refocusing efforts on transferring foreign capabilities, such as in cloud computing. 2️⃣ Prioritizing 10 major public sector “grand projets” to transform the EU investment environment: The proposed initiatives range from establishing a greenfield EU-wide regulatory framework, to developing a time-bound EU digital permitting system, and positioning the public sector as an anchor customer for radical innovation. 3️⃣ Private sector lighthouse initiatives to mobilize action: Examples include scaling quantum hubs and developing industrial AI stacks through collaborations inspired by the Airbus program. Highly recommended read. Link below. 🌟 #Innovation #Technology #Europe #EconomicGrowth #FutureOfWork #WEF #QuantumComputing #AI
