Marcus, who took the the mantle from iCAN Partnerships Lead Yasmin Carter-Esdale Dip CII, this month on this year’s East and Southeast Asian Heritage Month. 🗣 Marcus shares: "For this group, Role models and mentorship were identified as levers to inspire career paths otherwise perceived as out of reach due to lack of senior leaders whom one might better identify with. " 🔑 Some key takeaways from the column: 1️⃣ Cultural Recognition - East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) cultures are being celebrated and recognised beyond the general 'Asian' umbrella, with 2023 marking the third year of dedicated heritage month in the UK. 2️⃣ Challenging Stereotypes - ESEA communities confront stereotypes of being the 'model minority' and perceptions of being 'meek' or 'submissive', which hinder their representation in senior leadership roles - and this needs to be challenged. 3️⃣ Industry Progress - The heritage month is a time to reflect on the progress in diversity and inclusion in the industry, highlighted by events like the first ESEA community for (re)insurance colleagues by iCAN and discussions on career aspirations beyond stereotypes.
