We expand an approach the map the Wildland-Urban Interface in Portugal. Different approaches classified common Wildland-Urban Interface areas but varied elsewhere. Who would have thunk I could be on LinkedIn for many years, and this would be my very first post, a recognizable rambling on conservation theory.   After some great conferences and MSRA field trips this year, here are 4 important concepts to think about currently in the field of habitat restoration. Note that thermal and tree/forest conservation are not among them today. Saving those for another time. And a quick note about MSRA (MD Stream Restoration Association), an important if not essential collaboration and science discussion opportunity for habitat restoration, using a statement borrowed from a true mentor, Jeff Horan: "if you are not at the table, you may be on the menu".  Think about it.  So back to the 4 things, in no particular order:  1) soil compaction, more to think about and learn, 2) there are several reasons to ramp up surveys and assessments of birds and terrestrial insects in riparian corridors associated with stream restoration (some are doing this more already), 3) what are the considerations in using more woody material within restoration fill areas, not just surface and partially buried woody debris roughness, but in grading fill as we group-discussed only briefly so far at a field trip today (think Hügelkultur in a wet/dry subsurface area, or permanently wet areas as today's practitioners did, and 4) stream restoration policy and standards viewed and managed in the future as a "Wicked Problem" (look up that term).  Final word on #4, the response to my previous trial references to Wicked Problems has been underwhelming. Not one suggestion to discuss over a beer. Accepting that Wicked Problems are never solved but can be managed and dealt with in policy, social, and scientific approaches, something else to be thought about. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Mangroves play an important role in the protection of tropical coastal areas. Their large roots retain a lot of sediment and reduce wave action. But how strong are mangrove trees under extreme wave conditions? This is what the Delft University of Technology and Deltares, both #NWPmembers, are experimenting with at the Delta Flume, the world's most powerful wave flume. 🌊🌳 Researchers put great force on mangrove trees to measure the load on the trees and the trees’ movements. This allows them to estimate the wave attenuation. To this end, Bas Hofland, a hydraulic engineer at TU Delft, designed a new very cost-effective measurement method. "Instead of taking the whole tree out of context and hanging it in a system with external force gauges, we now use the tree itself. (Someone has deep pockets ;)) ...docs suggest replacing an environmental assessment for the North Coast transmission line — from Prince George to Terrace — with a speedier “alternative streamlined process.” The vaguely defined process could involve setting conditions to mitigate environmental impacts, but it is not clear what those would be or if the process would be transparent.An environmental assessment is an independent, rigorous and transparent process that would detail the line’s impacts and propose mitigations where possible. According to a BC Hydro presentation, the transmission line would affect as many as 101 private properties, including agricultural land. It would cut through traplines and woodlots, fall within 200 metres of archeological sites, overlap with designated ungulate winter habitat for moose and cross waterways that include habitat for at-risk white sturgeon. https://lnkd.in/ghAydakX
