With minimal regulation or clear guidelines, community engagement can often be overlooked when it comes to peatland restoration in the UK. At Caledonian Climate, we are looking to change this by placing an emphasis on improving communication and engagement with local communities. We sat down with our Environmental Consultants Jura Macmillan, who is spearheading our community engagement programme, to discuss the importance of cooperating and working with local residents in order to reach national peatland restoration targets. The Natural Capital Market is ready to grow! 🪴 The Natural Capital Market refers to the opportunity for private investment in restoring and enhancing 'natural capital', such as peatlands, woodlands and other nature-based solutions. Credits can be awarded and sold for the associated benefits of restoring this capital - such as an increase in biodiversity, carbon capture and storage, or water quality. #PeatlandRestoration is one of Scotland's most valuable natural assets, due to its long-lasting ability to store carbon and boost local biodiversity, the former of which is robustly verified and authenticated via the #PeatlandCode. Because of this, peatland is considered one of the more secure natural investments out there - bringing about a multitude of natural benefits, with minimal risk. In 2025, the Pealtand Code will also be integrating biodiversity uplift into its methodlogy, further enhancing the standards appeal. Interested in investing? Did you know that an estimated 10% of the planet's fresh water is stored in peatlands (and up to 70% of Scotland's drinking water)? 💧 Keeping peatlands healthy is, therefore, crucial for water security now and in the future. Not convinced? Here are just some of the ways healthy peatlands help with our water supply... 💧 Water quality: Water from healthy peatlands is naturally high quality, with low nutrient levels and few pollutants. This is because healthy peatlands act as a filter for water, reducing sediment and other debris. 💧 Water retention: Peatlands store a large portion of the world's freshwater resources. This in turn, serves as a vital habitat for a variety of plants and animals that thrive in this environment. 💧 Water regulation: Peatlands help regulate water flows, mitigating the risk of flooding. Brilliant to attend the Nature Finance evening reception on Seizing Opportunities in Peatland Finance yesterday. Keynote speakers, experts and investors alike came together to discuss the financial potential of restoring Scotland’s peatlands. With speakers including Hannah Wood (UBS Optimus Foundation), Graham Neville (NatureScot), Paul Leadbitter of North Pennine Peat Partnership and Landscape Finance Lab’s Paul Chatterton, the discussion highlighted the rapid growth of the UK’s nature market and explored how investor businesses and nature organisations alike can take advantage to progress global climate ambitions. Today we are at the Ecosystems Knowledge Network's Nature Finance Conference 2024 and are looking forward to a day of stimulating discussion. #NatureFinance #NatureMarket #NatureBasedSolutions #PeatlandRestoration #CarbonCredits

Busy restoring degraded peatlands, boosting biodiversity and building partnerships for long term change.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to grab the UK Nature market by the scruff of the neck by providing a dynamic, transparent and user friendly registry that can become the keystone of a thriving and high integrity UK carbon market. In a rapidly changing market where users are desperately trying to adopt and leverage new technologies, our current UK land carbon registry feels outdated and unable to respond. Caledonian Climate welcomes this re-tender and we are excited about the possibilities it could unlock. If you think you can bring a modern, ready to implement (and respond to changes in the market) solution to the table, please do consider responding to this call!
Could your organisation provide carbon registry services? The UK Land Carbon Registry is re-tendering for provision of registry services for the #PeatlandCode and #WoodlandCarbonCode. The first stage is a Prior Information Notice. 🌳 Supplier's event: 19 November 2pm - find out more about the process. 🌳 Responses to the notice: 26 November. If you can provide a user-friendly, efficient, secure, transparent and connected carbon registry, we'd love to hear from you 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebF-qEMr.

Are you making efforts to reduce your business's carbon emissions - but struggling to offset residual emissions? In our latest blog, we explore some of the popular, often UK-based options for offsetting carbon emissions. These include: 🌳 Woodland Creation 🌾Peatland Restoration ⚡️Renewable Energy 👷🏻♀️Engineered Removals But how do you decide which is the right option for your business's offsetting goals? Head over to our blog to get an in-depth look at carbon offsetting, the value it holds for businesses - and the wider community - and how it can help you achieve your net-zero goals. https://buff.ly/4f3lqX3 #PeatlandRestoration #ClimateCrisis #ScottishPeatlands #NatureBasedSolutions #NetZero

What would you do if we told you investing in #peatlandrestoration could improve your reputation as an employer and help you attract committed employees? Young people are increasingly opting for companies that do good for the planet. Last year, a Deloitte study showed that over 40% of young people would switch jobs based on climate concerns. The same study also showed that 55% of young people researched brands’ environmental impact and policies before accepting a job. When businesses choose to invest in peatland restoration, they demonstrate tangible evidence of their environmental values and mission. What's more, employees can see the impact their company is having by visiting peatland sites. Considering investing in peatland restoration? Alongside over 100 organisations and individuals, Caledonian Climate is calling on governments at #COP16Colombia to urgently prioritise action on water and #wetlands. Wetlands cover only around 6% of the Earth’s surface, but they are home to 40% of all known plant and animal species. What's more, Scotland alone holds 13% of the world’s blanket bog, making it hugely significant in the global ecosystem. We're arguing for action to be taken on water and wetlands in the negotiations at COP 16 and in efforts to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework. Read Wetlands International's full call to action below. #wetlandsinternational #peatlandrestoration #wetlandrestoration #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/edUZfxbn
