I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed with a fostering initiative (and God knows we need some ) and judging by the wider feedback I have seen, I’m not alone. If only fostering was just about fun and trying new things. When will these “week-end foster carers” be introduced to the reality of what cared-for children really need, in particular the need to be trauma-informed? What is the overall purpose of this initiative- if it’s about recruitment(ie to recruit people who will move from week-end to full-time) please share the research which backs this up. Or backs any of this up! Also did you consider how this undermines the brilliant work that the Mockingbird scheme is already fulfilling. providing far more comprehensive support from carers who are hugely experienced and trauma informed/trained? Perhaps Now Foster could instead have campaigned for more resources for Fostering Outreach Workers who already perform a role along the lines of this new scheme. Now Foster owe it to the wider fostering community to engage, discuss and debate why they feel this was ever a good idea. It’s completely baffled me I admit.

📺 Last night we had our very own Laurie Kilby and fostering applicant Poonum on The One Show with the amazing Neil Morrissey launching our programme of Weekend Foster Carers across London. Now Foster wants to reduce the barriers to entry into fostering, so that more of us are involved and have a stake in supporting children and young people in care through strong and meaningful relationships. The Weekenders programme is such a great opportunity to get started in fostering. You get matched with a child or young person, to support them long-term to achieve their goals, try new things and have fun. One of our colleagues likes referring to this as ‘all the fun, no school run!’. Watch below to find out more and get in touch if you want to explore how you can foster in 2024 and beyond 📺 You can also find all you need to get started on our website: www.nowfoster.org #fostering #fostercare #london

It left me speechless too Geoff and undermines all the work we are doing to raise standards and quality of foster care, the care our children deserve, and then this, with money behind them and influence they can get on the one show etc.. and further destroy foster care. Like you say Mockingbird fulfils this criteria with properly trained trauma informed foster carers. It also makes me very nervous that the people designing these inititives are not foster carers, I know the ones on the show have literally just been approved and one in assessment, maybe I need to forgive their naievity, but I can not forgive this level of arrogance in not listening to those who have more experience. The crass narative of 'all the fun and no school run' would make me cringe if it wasn't so dangerous for our children, the whole thing is so detrimental to children in care I can't get my head around it.

I’m also concerned about some of the emergency fostering initiatives we’re seeing. On one hand I think it’s responsible and right that we have services available which respond effectively when emergency care is needed. However, on the other hand I believe there are still too many emergency scenarios which could be avoided. Too many created by ineffective procedures and by badly informed policy. So the focus is becoming a reactive, rather than proactive one. The commissioning of emergency care (whether internal or external) needs to be tackled extremely carefully with a focus on understanding the drivers. If that doesn’t happen we’ll just see an increase in this type of care.
