Over two insightful days, Dr Raimon Tolosana-Delgado guided participants through the hands-on Predictive Geometallurgy, emphasizing the importance of modeling—from first principles to stochastic analysis. The workshop shed light on understanding uncertainty throughout the entire minerals value chain, equipping participants with valuable tools and perspectives. From deep sea to outer space mining, it is clear that the frontiers of geosciences are quickly expanding. But is there a limit to this expansion? If so, is this limit technological or ethical? Published in the prestigious international journal Global Challenges, this work promises to reshape our understanding of rare earth mineral formation. As global demand for rare earth elements skyrockets to meet the needs of our tech-driven world, insights from this research are invaluable. They not only deepen our understanding of mineral formation but also offer potential industrial and environmental applications. What did the researchers find? Contrary to previous assumptions, bastnäsite formation is far from simple. It's driven by a complex interplay of multiple factors, as revealed by experimental studies. The team's findings underscore the dynamic nature of rare earth mineral formation, highlighting the need for advanced simulation models and experimental protocols. The implications? Profound. Understanding bastnäsite formation opens doors for improved extraction methods and enhances our understanding of mineralogy as a whole. This research, funded by Science Foundation Ireland, Geological Survey Ireland, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland, is a testament to the power of collaborative scientific inquiry. Lead author Melanie Maddin, PhD Candidate in Geology, and Prof. Juan Diego Rodriguez-Blanco, Principal Investigator of the research group, emphasise the significance of these findings. Topic 1: Tectonic structures of the Gombe Inlier by Bilkisu Shehu Muhammad A detailed geologic mapping of the Gombe inlier was carried out. The geological formations mapped in the area are mainly: The Bima Formation (late Aptian - early Albian), Yolde Formation (Cenomanian), Pindiga Formation (early-late Turonian and Coniacian), Gombe Formation (Maastrichtian), Kerri-Kerri formation (Paleocene). The major faults affected by the area are The NE-SW trending Gombe Fault and N-S Wuro ladde-Wurin Dole faults. Other structural features such as fold, and unconformity occur in the Area. Topic 2: Enhancing Student Engagement & Professional Development AAPG ABU in View by Sheikh Ahmad Nmatakwo A comprehensive overview of the dynamic and impactful activities undertaken by the AAPG Ahmadu Bello University Student Chapter during the academic year. The chapter, based in Zaria, Nigeria, has been at the forefront of promoting geoscience education, professional development, and networking opportunities for its members. The activities included participation in workshops and conferences across Nigeria, hosting a student symposium for entry-level geoscience students, community outreach and knowledge sharing, and launching a chapter magazine. The stratigraphy of the earth crust is indeed a keen interest to me. Formation of the earth which is often characterised with the interbedding of the Sand-Stones, Shale and a bit of Shaly-Sand is very amazing. It wonders many how Millions of Pores in the sand will generate a drive mechanism for the transport phenomenon of oil. This is just a preliminary of the quest in this research work. Thanks to the great group of five PhD-students at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences providing valuable perspectives and input on Responsible Research and Innovation linked to the norwegian opening process for deep sea mineral exploration and possible future #deepseamining in Norway. Key findings and recommendations are: ↔ Where Did All the Nuance Go? - Debates are often short and leaves no room for nuances. Media headlines are often angled in ways such that it creates polarization, and the common ground and nuances are often missed in much of the communication in the public domain. The students recommend platforms fostering inclusive dialogue and enhance public engagement. 🔉 Suggested improvements for government communication - Clearly differentiate between exploration and exploitation phases in public communications to avoid misinterpretations and increase transparency. 👨🎓 Younger people are most positive – An informal survey with about 450 participants found that younger people were more positive about deep-sea mining than older respondents.
