Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project Client: CYP & Design Construction Geomotion Engagement: May 2018 to Current The Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project involves constructing twin 9km rail tunnels between Kensington and South Yarra, along with five new underground stations. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to enhance Melbourne's public transport network. Challenge Building the Metro Tunnel through Melbourne's CBD and densely populated areas requires a stringent and reliable instrumentation and monitoring system. The multi-site nature of the construction demands efficient equipment and resource planning to provide the project team with accurate data and a robust risk management system. Geomotion Australia Victoria designed and implemented a near real-time data management system for this project. This included the installation, baselining, and maintenance of geotechnical and structural instruments. The system also integrates data from InSAR, excavation stages, and third-party sources, forming a comprehensive monitoring program that addresses the needs of all stakeholders. As Australia's largest instrumentation project, thousands of instruments were installed across five precincts and two portals. Geomotion utilized Loadsensing technology, a long-range, low-power wireless solution used globally in IoT networks, to ensure connectivity. Instruments from various manufacturers, including Sisgeo, Soil Instruments, and Geosense, were connected to the monitoring system. Geomotion Australia Victoria efforts ensured timely data availability and compliance with safety and quality requirements, even in challenging conditions. The experience gained from this project led to the development of Geomotion Australia Cloud, a software suitable for large-scale monitoring projects involving geospatial, InSAR, and excavation data. Geomotion Australia Victoria also supported the training of Engineering Cadets and utilized the local supply chain. Key Installations and Instruments The project included automated monitoring with Loadsensing, involving over 490 Loadsensing 5-Channel VW Data Loggers, 150 Loadsensing Digital Loggers, 110 Loadsensing 1-Channel VW Data Loggers, 120 Loadsensing Wireless Tiltmeters, and 19 Loadsensing Telemetry Gateways for surface and tunnel monitoring. #MelbourneMetroTunnel #Geomotion #InstrumentationProject #PublicTransport #Infrastructure #GeotechnicalMonitoring #StructuralMonitoring #RealTimeData #Engineering #TunnelConstruction #UrbanDevelopment #Loadsensing #DataManagement #ProjectManagement #Innovation #ConstructionSafety Feel free to reach out our office for assistance with your geotechnical monitoring needs. Tunneling is the Future of Construction & Infrastructure As urban areas grow denser and the need for efficient, sustainable infrastructure increases, tunneling is emerging as a key solution. Here are a few reasons why tunneling is set to shape the future of infrastructure: Optimizing Space: Tunneling utilizes underground space, allowing cities to develop essential infrastructure without consuming valuable surface areas. Reducing Traffic Congestion: By providing dedicated underground routes for transportation, such as subways and vehicular tunnels, tunneling helps alleviate surface traffic congestion. Enhancing Resilience and Safety: Tunnels offer protection against natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and storms, providing a safer alternative for critical infrastructure. Technological and Engineering Advances: Innovations in tunneling technology, such as advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and improved engineering techniques, have made the process more efficient and cost-effective. As urban challenges related to population growth, climate change, and resource management intensify, tunneling offers a forward-thinking approach to developing sustainable, resilient, and efficient infrastructure. GHW Global is currently working with some of the leading contractors in the country on innovative tunneling projects.
