The University of Kent has been running the Employability Points scheme for some years now. It gives employers a unique opportunity to take on a highly motivated student for a short work placement (anything from a few days to 12 weeks). What does the student get from it ? Valuable work experience, skills development, an understanding of their future workplace, improved soft skills - and lots more to add to their CV. What does an Employer gain from it ? A highly motivated and qualified student, an extra brain/pair of hands in the workplace, and the chance to 'try before you buy' to see if they might like to employ the student when the scheme ends. It's also a great way to pay it forward and offer a talented student the chance to experience your workplace, culture and colleagues - invaluable for them as they seek to enter the workplace in future. It typically includes internships, apprenticeships, or other hands-on experiences that provide practical skills and real-world exposure in a chosen field. These programs aim to bridge the gap between theoretical learning in the classroom and practical application in the workplace. They can be valuable for students to explore career paths, gain relevant experience, and develop professional skills. Understanding : School-to-Work programs are distinct in the sense that it takes into the mix both classroom theory and practical work experience, prepping the students for the workforce. Most of these projects are based on the partnerships institutional arrangements, employers and community organizations. They provide a framework for the student to pick up the relevant skills, merits, and benefits prior to completion of his school education. Programs : School to work program 1. Career Exploration: Introducing students to various career options through workshops, career fairs, and guest speakers. 2 Skill Development: Providing training in essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. 3.Internships or Apprenticeships: Offering opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting related to their career interests. Benefits : 1. Improved Career Readiness: Expanded employment and competitiveness of the region within the labor market. 2. Enhanced Learning Outcomes: This is not enough given the high rates of obesity and low physical activity levels among college students. Increasing physical activity levels leads to better academic performance with higher engagement rates recorded among students. 3. Smooth Transition to Employment: Through these initiatives, college students receive the important tools such as confidence, and skills that they require to enter the job market. 4. Increased Industry Collaboration: Refine academic majors and adjust their content structure for the purpose of current industrial demands. Conclusion : In summary, School-to-Work programs prepare students for successful careers through practical experiences, skills development, and industry partnerships, benefiting both individuals and the economy

👩🎓 Have you ever heard of a college that guarantees job placement after graduation? Curry College in Massachusetts (a longtime member of the Top College Consultants database of #neurodiversity-friendly #colleges at https://lnkd.in/eqGBAa9), is now making that promise! From the website: The Curry Commitment is a job guarantee program for full-time #undergraduate students. This four-year program prepares students to enter the #workforce seamlessly after graduation by integrating career readiness programming and experiential learning opportunities into the undergraduate experience. Through this program, students will receive support and services that prepare them to take the next steps towards their career shortly after graduation. Some of those resources include: ✔ Experiential learning through an #internship in a related field or research project ✔Career counseling ✔Resume and cover letter workshops ✔Interview skills training ✔Job search support The Curry Commitment will retroactively apply to current first-year students (Class of 2027) and the College will publicly report on program outcomes. The program will be built around competencies outlined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), emphasizing career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, equity and #inclusion, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and technology. Curry's Commitment Students will be required to participate in the program for all four years of their undergraduate experience. Any student who does not receive a job offer or is not accepted into graduate/professional school within six months after graduating, will be eligible for one of the following options: ✔The student will have their student loans paid up to 12 months while they continue to work with a Career and Experiential Learning Center advisor; or ✔The student will be provided a paid internship in an organization aligned with their field of study up to 12 months while they continue to work with a Career and Experiential Learning Center advisor; or ✔Tuition will be waived for 6 credits of graduate studies at Curry College for a program for which they have been accepted. The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) announced the 2024-2025 Student Work Placement Intake has opened. "The SWP internship subsidies help employers hire post-secondary students by providing wage subsidies of 50% to a maximum of $5,000 for internships between April 1st, 2024 and the end of January 2025. Subsidies may be increased to 70% with a maximum of $7,000 for students confirmed to be part of a priority group (to learn more about priority groups, click here).
