I am humbled and honored to have been nominated by my peers and selected by the committee to receive the Researcher of the Year award! I recently received my 20-years-of-service plaque from the State of North Carolina, prompting me to reflect on my career. I actually fell into this work. After graduating from Bren School of Environmental Science & Management - University of California, Santa Barbara, I thought I'd get a job to develop conservation policies to effect change in our communities. While I don't create policies, I've worked on really great projects that contribute to making communities better places to live. Some of the projects I'm most proud of include: -Developing the Let's Go NC! skills based curriculum for teaching elementary aged children about walking and bicycling (https://lnkd.in/exFgptxK) -The recently completed TCRP Research Report 248: Tactile Wayfinding in Transportation Settings for Travelers Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired (https://lnkd.in/epJXAdQ7) -And establishing several programs for NCDOT. These include: --Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative, which as awarded funds to develop or update over 240 plans across the state thus far, --Safe Routes to School Program, where I served as interim coordinator for the state, --The Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure Network, --The Non-Motorized Volume Data Program, and --The Pedestrian Crossing Guidance and Flow Chart I like to think I've also had a hand in improving safety through research I've been involved with to study rumble strip gaps for bicyclists, variable posted speed limit signs in school zones, separated bike lanes, shared use path crossings, and wayfinding for accessibility. I have seen these projects and research influence the decisions that policymakers have made. I didn't do any of this work alone, so I share this award with the many people I've collaborated with along the way. Every project is a team effort, and I always learn a lot from the contributions and expertise of others. Finally, it has been a rewarding job to be a researcher, even though this isn't what I thought I wanted to be when I grew up. 😉 I am glad I fell into this profession, and I thank Mary Meletiou, APBP's 2011 Award recipient for Lifetime Achievement, for taking a chance on me and mentoring me early in my career.
We are proud to share that PBIC team member Sarah O'Brien was recently named Research Professional of the Year by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP)! As a senior research associate at UNC Highway Safety Research Center, Sarah was recognized for her significant contributions to innovative research in increasing accessibility in the public realm, pedestrian and bicyclist data, and decision-making tools for facility selection. The award selection committee noted that “her colleagues and peers value her guidance, mentorship, and expertise in navigating research processes.” Sarah also recently celebrated 20 years of experience in nonmotorized planning, education, policy, and design. Congratulations, Sarah, and thank you for your dedication to making our roads safer for all! Read more about APBP 2024 Annual Award Winners: https://lnkd.in/gVmEuxy

#K12 #superintendents take a multifaceted approach to addressing anti-Semitism and other types of discrimination on their campuses. Doug Roberts, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Education Innovation, spoke with WICC radio’s Melissa in the Morning this week to give listeners a better understanding of superintendents’ role in preventing such attacks. https://lnkd.in/eYh5e-Mn The first approach #education #leaders take is prevention. “These are things we fight hard against as leaders, and we do so by building cultures in our districts where people feel included and welcomed and supported,” he says. The second is more social-emotional #SEL awareness and funding thanks to initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels. “We were able to build up stronger networks for mental health supports,” Doug says. “If a student feels that they are subject to any sort of anti-Semitic attack, we have to make sure we are checking in with kids." Third, Doug emphasized that when incidents happen, they need to be teachable moments for the children responsible. Schools can have strong policies against hatred but at the same time attempt to understand why the students acted as they did and address the root causes through education and building better understanding. In early May, the leaders of some of the largest U.S. public school districts testified before Congress about steps they are taking to address anti-Semitism, and Doug urged Congress to take action too, such as re-upping mental health funding for schools. “Superintendents who went to D.C. made a strong showing for our profession,” he says. “We literally stay up at night thinking about how we can make sure every student in our schools feels safe.” #ThoughtLeadership #Schools #Inclusion #Respect #TeachableMoments #MentalHealth #Wellbeing
We’re proud to share that our Founder and CEO, Doug Roberts, was a guest on Melissa in the Morning, WICC 600 AM and 107.3 FM, discussing "Attacking Anti-Semitism at K-12 Campuses." During the conversation, Doug addressed the problem and potential solutions, shedding light on the Institute for Education Innovation (IEI) and its efforts. IEI is a network of over 100 K-12 superintendents committed to improving student outcomes.

President and Chief Executive Officer, and Board Member, Education Forward Arizona. Helping students succeed; increasing postsecondary attainment to ensure a brighter future for Arizona
Across #Arizona —and really, across the country—there is a growing conversation about the value of college…Is it worth it? Who should go to college? Who really benefits from a college education? There is a lot of chatter suggesting that maybe education and training after high school isn’t worth it, or that the public doesn’t see the value of that for everybody. Yesterday we hosted this Morning Scoop with the Arizona Capitol Times to respond with strong evidence that Arizona voters do see value in education and training beyond high school. And, #voters want the state's Policy, Legislative, Education, and Business leaders do more to provide opportunities for #postsecondary education and training. But as you will hear our panelists say, this is not just an #education issue! Increasing opportunities for education and training after high school provides amazing benefits to individuals, their families and communities, and to the economic strength of the state. This issue affects every single one of us. Find out why in the post ⤵ .
ICYMI: Today's #MorningScoop with Arizona Capitol Times shed light on how Arizonans feel about the importance of education and training after high school, and what actions are needed to help our state reach it's attainment goal, #Achieve60AZ. Thank you to Gary Grado for excellent hosting and our incredible panelists: Rich Nickel, Education Forward Arizona Sybil Francis, Center for the Future of Arizona Monica Villalobos, Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Paul Bentz, HighGround Inc. Do you know why I love spring? Because everything is re-energized from winter, the days are getting longer, and there’s excitement for the new season ahead. That’s why I also love the #nsps spring meetings held in Washington, D.C., each year- there is renewed energy for #surveying through the activities held all week: -The student competition, hosted by NSPS Young Surveyors Network (YSN) and NSPS, showcasing the best and brightest students and educators in surveying across the country. -Numerous agencies collaborating to support the future of surveying. -Directors from across the country coming together to work on the profession’s most pressing issues. -Installing newly elected officers to carry out the work of the professional association for the next year. (By the way, it is an honor to be serving as your President-Elect). -Members attending Day on the Hill activities to educate lawmakers on topics impacting the geospatial profession. I can't wait to see what we accomplish together in the year ahead! #ysn #fig
