We sat down with the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, a non-profit school providing education, life skills, vocational training and personal development for 18–25-year-olds from under-resourced communities in South Africa, and one of our Grantees since 2022. We spoke with some of their amazing students and staff to learn about the incredible work they are doing and how our funding has supported their mission. Our approach to achieving our goal – the eradication of world hunger – includes the packaging of a highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified rice & vegetable casserole by volunteers and then arranging for the distribution of those meals to starving children and their families. We have relationships with NGOs (non-governmental organizations) such as churches, schools, and nonprofit organizations, operating in developing countries on the ground to receive and distribute the meals prepared by our volunteers. When one of our international partners appeals to us, we put them in line for a shipment. We can only ship to places where we know the food will be properly and freely distributed through an organization that can handle such an effort. Accountability is key - we need to have a good relationship with people we trust to do the right thing, because we can't always be there in the countries we're shipping to when the food is being distributed. We seek out organizations that have proven track records of successfully getting the food to those in need and keeping it out of the hands of corrupt government officials and criminals. We ask our feeding partners to document how they distributed the food and to provide us with pictures of the children, youth and adults who receive it. We strive to minimize our administration costs so the maximum amount of your donations are going straight into the feeding program. https://lnkd.in/gVD7QNMx

Overall, the Turkic proverb (Bi:rin bi:rin miñ bolu:r, tama tama köl bolu:r / Unit by unit a thousand is formed, drop by drop a lake is formed.) was intended to educate family members, audiences and entire peoples to strive both for unity and to be patient until the necessary results are achieved. https://lnkd.in/eVAUWmQT Bi:rin bi:rin miñ bolu:r, tama tama köl bolu:r. Voting is open until Friday 10/17/24 to help select sessions for NTEN's Nonprofit Technology Conference in April 2025. Make Tech Work For You has submitted two session ideas for your consideration and vote: 1. Eradicate imposter syndrome from data and technology work https://lnkd.in/e4UGzEQ2 (FYI I really needed this topic for myself, and also am excited to be offering a group coaching program around this as well: https://lnkd.in/ed5sURz7) 2. How asynchronous, personalized videos are revolutionizing relationship building https://lnkd.in/ePyJ8baz (FYI This is something I am SO pumped about and can't wait to share. You can try it out for yourself here: https://lnkd.in/eWNT_Nmk) And there are just about a million sessions that I personally want to go to and have voted for, so check them all out!! https://lnkd.in/eFP4Dse3

Multi-year funding is key for small charities, it allows for strategising and stability to do the long term thinking #multiyearfunding
Grant-making contacts - do take a look at this research from Institute For Voluntary Action Research on the value of multi-year funding. The findings (that multi-year funding builds trust, provides stability, aids forwards planning, and supports learning and improvements in practice) chime closely with our own experiences at Berkeley Foundation with longer term funding partnerships of 3 years+
Time to end the dominance of short-term grants - IVAR

Multi year funding is so important for the sustainability of the sector, it provides security and enables charities to focus on what they do best. Making the same organisations submit so many applications for small amounts of short term funding is not going to achieve the impact or systemic social change required. I also would like to see funders push beyond 3 yr funding cycles and consider 5 or more as a norm.
