Teka Miller-Alston, Robert Broome, CAE and I were privileged to spend the day with Kelli Roberts and Julie Williams with CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) discussing the pipeline and CLA's efforts with their pilot Academy in conjunction with the Hispanic Leage of Winston-Salem and Forsyth Technical Community College. My takeaways from our incredible conversation:
- There are no quick fixes. Taking something from concept to application involving so many individuals from around the country takes time, perseverance and agility if you want to create something sustainable.
- Show up and plan to stay! Yes, we need to plant routes, we can't fix a people problem like we're sourcing raw materials for a widget. We need to show up, invest and plant roots in the community. Those roots will grow into the beautiful garden like CLA is growing.
- Lead with love! Jen Leary shared the sentiment with me back in May when she spoke about this pilot program. Listening to the dedication and compassion of the CLA family to identify, develop and support their first cohort is inspiring on so many levels. We heard countless stories of the CLA family willingly sharing extra time to help others reach for dreams never thought possible.
We talk about how the profession gets a bad rap and that we need to change the narrative. We need to focus on the heart of this profession. CPAs, and especially the CPAs at CLA, have incredible hearts for their teams, their clients and especially their communities. Sharing stories of how one firm, in a pilot phase, changed the lives of 11 individuals and is creating a model to ramp up talent development locally is a testament to what WE can do and North Carolina Association of CPAs (NCACPA) is here for it! #leadership#CPAs#NCACPA#TEAM#CEOonthego

“Leaders and members of boards that have succeeded in becoming much more diverse agree that without intentionality, diversity doesn’t just happen. But with thoughtful execution of planned strategies, boards can become more diverse and therefore more effective, respected, and trusted.”
Does your board culture reflect a genuine commitment to the value of diversity in your governance responsibilities?
Does your board culture accurately reflect the culture of your staff, faculty, and students?

“Incremental governance and negotiated inertia only highlighted the failure of most colleges to differentiate their message, thereby separating themselves from their peers with anything remotely resembling a crisp and well-communicated distinctiveness…In shared governance, the ringmaster is the chair of the Board of Trustees. When selecting a new board chair, the board should always seek experienced, competent leaders who are devoid of an agenda…they should have a collegial and effective working professional relationship with the president and key faculty leadership..,colleges and universities are businesses. They operate by different rules, however, than corporate America-an essential difference that must be understood if shared governance is to work…If a new board chair cannot support the president, then the board, the president and senior staff, and the faculty must recognize and solve this issue openly and fairly before a crisis emerges. Failure to do so often does irreparable financial and reputational harm to a college or university-harm that can take years to diminish.”
I had the pleasure of connecting with Cooper, who gave some excellent insights on getting into a field dealing with government affairs. Check out his thoughts here!

I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a more influential quote during this particular moment in time. I ran into these words the first time I stepped onto the USC campus. It was a late-Spring evening and I was attending an elaborate dinner celebrating the impending start of a doctoral program I'd always dreamt of.
I knew there was something uniquely purposeful about this event, but I had no idea how immensely life-changing the journey would be. As it turns out, it's not so much the audacious act of pursuing a doctorate that's transforming my sense of self.
Rather, it's the knowledge and the constant, formative discovery of my life's potential that's completely changing how I see the world. After so much time reaching and searching, I'm beginning to cast the die on how I can positively affect the human condition, in my very own way.

In a few days we'll be launching our first BTR TMRW program of 2024. It's called "The Road to Madison."
It's a progressive journey toward home ownership and property investment through reframing our thoughts on real estate, discovering our true potential, and devoting ourselves to building a legacy that stands the test of time.
At first blush, it may sound odd to combine the foundational pillars of health & wellness and personal development with home ownership. But that's probably because it's a concept that's new to the industry. Just remember how this post started.
