Think sunshine, wind, flowing water, the heat beneath our feet (geothermal), and even plant matter (biomass)! These sources offer a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional energy production. ☀️ Unveiling the Sustainability Challenges: While renewable energy looks incredibly promising, the path to a truly sustainable future isn't without its hurdles. Here are a few key challenges that come to mind: Energy Storage: Imagine capturing the sun's rays or harnessing a strong wind gust – fantastic! But how do we efficiently store this clean energy for use when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing? I recently had the privilege of accompanying The Economist's visit, alongside Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, to EDP's innovative floating solar project in Alqueva, Portugal. We know that in order to meet our environmental goals, achieve energy independence and promote access to affordable energy for all, innovation is indispensable. The Economist's article highlights how we are taking this path with determination, with a "technology that is now ready to shine". It was inspiring to see EDP's commitment to innovation and sustainability up close. Accompanying this visit and witnessing the technology in action reinforced my confidence in the immense potential of renewable energy. Renewable energy has become a cornerstone of global efforts to overcome climate change and achieve sustainable development. The transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power requires substantial investment.
