Pioneering marine monitoring technology at our Kaskasi offshore wind farm! In collaboration with leading marine scientists, we are launching the ‘SeaMe’ project to better understand the impact of offshore wind on the marine ecosystem. Using cutting-edge technologies, including a drone and an autonomous underwater vehicle, our goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between offshore wind farms and the ecosystem through the use of a sound scientific approach, together with new AI-based and CO2-minimising monitoring tools.

Located on 770 hectares in New South Wales, Limondale is one of Australia's largest solar farms, generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 105,000 homes each year. We're also currently developing a battery energy storage system on the same site, which has a planned capacity of 50 MWs for a duration of 8 hours.

Cross-border teamwork in the name of #hydrogen! Recently, our Dutch RWE Hydrogen team visited our Lingen demonstration electrolyser plant. We had two exciting days filled with sessions on Health and Safety, strategic planning with Sigrid Boelens, and knowledge exchange. It was a great opportunity to share experiences in developing and operating energy facilities within #TeamRWE, contributing to the establishment of hydrogen across the entire value chain. A big thanks to everyone involved, with a special shout-out to our colleagues Tim Besseling and Max Coenen.

The future of electricity belongs to renewable energy – this is once again signified by this year’s World Energy Outlook.   As the report states, with 560 gigawatts of new renewable capacity added in 2023 and investments approaching USD 2 trillion for clean energy projects each year, clean energy is entering the energy system at an unprecedented rate.   Though many challenges still remain. Renewable energy mitigates many of the risks we have seen in the global energy crisis. And we still need a comprehensive approach to energy security with robust clean energy supply chains. Markets have fragmented with new trade measures affecting clean energy technologies and uncertainties about how policies will evolve in the coming years. At the same time, electricity demand is soaring, driven by electrification (mobility, heating, …) and new technologies like AI. Overall, the energy transition calls for a holistic approach based on long-term policies, covering renewables, grid expansion, storage solutions, and more. Equally important is ensuring that we achieve this as cost-effectively as possible. Fatih Birol & the whole team at International Energy Agency (IEA), thanks again for providing this insightful analysis of the current state and future of the energy transition. While many obstacles remain, this year’s outlook is a timely reminder that there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic and maintain momentum.

Preparations for Denmark’s to date largest offshore wind project are in full swing! The first eight monopile foundations for our wind farm Thor have arrived at the Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands. With lengths up to 100 meters and a weight of 1,500 tonnes, each foundation is as heavy as 1,000 small cars. The 72 foundations will find their new home in the Danish North Sea, approximately 22 kilometers off the coast of Jutland. Installation is expected to start in spring 2025. Once fully commissioned in 2027, Thor will have a capacity of more than 1 GW and will be capable of providing electricity for the equivalent of more than a million Danish households.

When agriculture and solar power go hand in hand! With fertile soil being a precious resource, we are testing how producing green electricity and growing crops on the same land can be best combined. On an around seven-hectare recultivation site, we installed three different technical Agri-PV concepts. Working with Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, we are able to explore the potential for double yields from solar energy and agriculture.
