Eric Parry Architects revisited Josef Gartner GmbH in Gundelfingen, Germany, to see progress on the façade of our 1 Liverpool Street project. The team saw a mock-up of the ground and first floors, including the mighty nine metre cast metal columns, whose impressive scale will provide a fitting frame for the building's main entrance. We also witnessed the performance testing of the seventh floor 'attic' façade, which stood firm against wind, water, and impacts from various weights. This façade - formed of a series of intricately patterned cast metal piers and lintels arrayed around the top of the building - provides an ornate 'cornice' on which the inclined mansard roof above it sits. Evident in both mock-ups is the practice's continuing interest in craft and materiality, with the patterning of the muscular cast metal elements looking particularly fine in Germany's August sunshine! We were joined on the visit by the main contractor, Mace, and façade consultant, FMDC Ltd.
