Earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher, such as the 1989 earthquake in Newcastle, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 13 people and saw more than 160 people injured, occur every one to two years. Sustainable Vertical Earthquake Strengthening - Kürberg, Zürich (CH) Project: The Kürberg housing complex consists of a continuous underground parking garage and three apartment buildings. The structural analysis showed that the earthquake resistance was insufficient. Solution: The masonry walls were strengthened with post-tensioned CFRP plates (CarboStress®) to restore earthquake resistance. The plates cover the full height of the building and are anchored in the basement garage deck slab. The fixed end anchors are located on the roofs of the buildings. The post-tensioning force is introduced into the deck slab via a steel component. The Loma Prieta earthquake was a major earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area of California in 1989. Caused by a slip along the San Andreas Fault, the quake lasted 10–15 seconds and measured 6.9 on the Richter Scale. Soil Liquefaction: The Hidden Danger Beneath Our Feet During Earthquakes When the earth shakes during an earthquake, there's a menacing phenomenon that can amplify its destruction: Soil Liquefaction. But what exactly is it? In simple terms, soil liquefaction occurs when saturated or partially saturated soil substantially loses strength and stiffness in response to an applied stress such as shaking during an earthquake, causing it to behave like a liquid. Imagine building on solid ground, and in a few terrifying moments, that solid ground turns to quicksand. Why does this happen? The intense shaking from seismic activity can increase the pressure between the particles in wet and loose soils, leading them to separate and cause the soil to flow like water. The implications of soil liquefaction are significant: Building Collapse: Structures can sink or tilt as their foundations are no longer supported by solid ground. Ground Ruptures: The surface can crack and deform. Landslides: Sloped areas can fail and move downhill. Infrastructure Damage: Roads, bridges, pipelines, and other essential structures can be severely affected. Recognizing and understanding soil liquefaction is crucial for architects, engineers, and urban planners, especially in earthquake-prone regions. We can actually trace some soil problems to soil liquefaction. Note, the external factor triggering the saturated soil to behave like a liquid doesn't really have to be earthquake. They can be mechanical triggers under human influence, volcanic eruptions, etc. It is better to avoid liquefied land areas but if they are not avoidable one of the following prevention method has to be implemented; -Vibro compaaction method - Dynamic compaction - Drainage columns - Grouting compaction. Important points for Earthquake resistant Building. It is not possible to predict the exact timing of an earthquake but by taking precautionary measures one could definitely help in minimizing the damage to property and loss of life. During an earthquake most buildings collapse resulting in a high death rate. Here are a few measures that a homeowner should take to prevent damage to property. If building plans include masonry infill walls, the best solution is to add steel frames to correct structural problems. Another solution could be to leave space between the walls and the building frame allowing for some drift as the building moves during an earthquake. To make a building earthquake proof, it is important to put shear walls, a shear core and cross-bracing as they provide additional strength. The building is bolted to the foundation, providing support walls called shear walls, which help in reinforcing the building that in turn resist rocking movements. Shear walls at the center of a building, around an elevator shaft or stairwell form a shear core. After the earthquakes: Experts discuss building codes in Türkiye and the U.S. As a result of the two major earthquakes that struck Türkiye in Feb. of 2023, an estimated 320,000 buildings were heavily damaged or collapsed. In northwestern Syria, which was also affected by the earthquake, more than 9,100 buildings collapsed. This earthquake sequence was the most devastating to hit Türkiye in more than 20 years and the fifth-deadliest earthquake of the 21st century.
