Today marks a monumental milestone in healthcare as we celebrate the groundbreaking of Henry Ford Health's $2.2B expansion. This transformative project is set to redefine the future of patient care and innovation, right here in our hometown.
The Gilbert Family Foundation is contributing $134M to this endeavor which will bring the renowned Shirley Ryan AbilityLab to Detroit. Our Co-Founder Dan Gilbert knows firsthand how exceptional rehab care can change patient health outcomes. After suffering a stroke in 2019, Dan began rehab treatment there. And along that journey, he asked, "why don't we have this in Detroit?" That question ultimately led to this investment.
And like Dan, we believe that Detroiters deserve the very best, which is why are also creating a $10M fund to support Detroiters whose insurance doesn't cover their rehab needs. But our vision doesn't end there. We are proud that the hospital expansion will also include the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute, the first of its kind, brick-and-mortar research facility in the world dedicated to neurofibromatosis research. In addition to supporting patients with top-tier health care, these investments will also bring the very best talent to our city.
Together, we know that we can improve the lives of residents in our communities - because as Dan says, "you'll see it when you believe it." We believe in our vision, and we are excited to see it come to life.
