GFF exists to accelerate a cure for NF1 and grow opportunity and equity in Detroit and our home cities.

About us

The Gilbert Family Foundation is a private nonprofit foundation founded by philanthropists Dan and Jennifer Gilbert to address their two priorities and passions: accelerating a cure for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and transforming the city of Detroit, Michigan. The Foundation has embarked on two bold, high risk/high reward NF1 research initiatives: (1) the Gene Therapy Initiative (GTI), to develop curative therapies that address the underlying genetic abnormalities in NF1 patients, and (2) the Vision Restoration Initiative (VRI), inspired by their son’s loss of vision from NF1 and with a goal of advancing vision restoration therapies.

When each of us shows up to the polls, we amplify the collective voice of our community. We demand to be seen, heard, and represented. We hold our elected officials accountable, and we advocate for the policies and programs that will create positive change in our neighborhoods. Your vote is your superpower. Use it.

Voting is one of the most fundamental ways we can shape the future of our city, state, and country. It's how we elect leaders who will fight for the issues that matter most to our businesses, our employees, and our communities. It's how we advocate for the resources, policies, and programs that will drive positive, lasting change. When each of us shows up to the polls, we amplify the collective voice. And at the Rocket Community Fund and Gilbert Family Foundation, we believe in the power of community - and that starts with each individual having a voice in the democratic process. Our community has faced immense challenges, but we've also shown incredible resilience. Now, it's time to channel that. Don't just get out and vote - be a voter.

  • Yesterday, Linda Nosegbe and Brandi McNoriell-Brown joined Black Tech Saturdays for a powerful conversation about the Gilbert Family Foundation's commitment to economic mobility. We know that if we're going to help Detroit residents build prosperity for themselves and future generations, we must work together differently and disrupt the status quo that has left too many residents on the outside looking in. That's why we were so proud to also announce a new $1.2 million grant to help BTS continue to grow! As our Executive Director Laura Grannemann explains: “All Detroiters deserve the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the city's growing tech sector. Johnnie Turnage and Alexa Turnage have built an incredible community through Black Tech Saturdays and we are proud to work with them to dismantle the systemic barriers that have historically limited opportunity for Black residents.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ev67ws_j Special thank you Orlando Bailey for moderating the discussion.

  • "I see the way in which people perceive and support the role of arts and culture evolving significantly. I am excited for the narrative about arts and culture to shift from being just “nice to have” and “enjoyable” to also include “tools for social change” and “indicators for community vitality.” I am looking forward to the ways in which people think about cultural ecosystems to expand. I think more and more people are seeing the impact of arts and culture as a driver of community development, economic mobility and social connectivity and belonging." Learn more about our new Director of Arts & Culture, Akua Hill, and her insightful perspective about the role the arts play in building more resilient communities.
