One theme that emerged as we surveyed our partners about their work supporting adolescent girls and young women of color: we need more funders who are willing to trust girls' knowledge and leadership. 👉 It's hard to get money for girls around policy/advocacy, because childhood is considered separate from the public sphere—even though many teen girls are already activists 👉 It's hard to get funding that supports girls' mental health, even though girls themselves often cite that as one of their biggest challenges 👉 It's hard to get funding for experimental work that allows girls to activate their own agency and power. As one focus group participant told us: "It is very easy to request money for sanitary pads, but if you try and get funding for girls to start their own factory where they will produce sanitary products, it's really tough." For some reason since 2016, our work in democracy legislation has been faced with accusations of "it's illegal," "they can't win so they cheat." From the Ballot Cure Act, to secure ballot drop boxes, to allowing 17yo to vote in the primaries, one party's members are vehemently against its citizens voting. We need to challenge that mindset. Let's get some things out of the way first about this new law that will allow 17 year olds to vote in the primary election if they turn 18 on or before the general election. 1- It's totally legal. Primary elections are nominating elections within each party. You are picking your party's winners who will go up against the other parties in the general election. 2- It's not new. In fact, 24 states have this already. (20 are bipartisan, 4 are Dem-only.) 3- It did not require a law to allow 17yo to vote in the primary. In fact, each party could have — in a partisan way — allowed 17yo to vote in their primary/nominating election in their own primary. (But going the legislative route makes it nonpartisan requiring both parties and in a "blue" state like NJ, the DEMs could have gone the partisan route and just invited the 17yo voters to their party!) 4- It will benefit all legislative districts in the state, RED or BLUE. Their inspiring journeys illuminate the path toward a more inclusive and equitable future for nonprofits everywhere. I am where I am today, because other women shared their knowledge and expertise freely. There's nothing more inspiring that women supporting women, because we know it's not a competition. There's room for us all to be successful. I carry a piece of each female mentor with me. Jenny Amory, taught me to negotiate prices and leverage nonprofit discounts. Kathryn A. (Katie) Wheeler taught me how to preserve authors' voices while editing. Katie Bayerl taught me how to apply a DBIE lens to my writing. Namrata Patel taught me to invest in my teams' present and futures and to make safe space for mistakes. Beth Bryant taught me how to refine my data analysis and projections. Laurie Heller taught me how to design within brand standards. Cassidy Leighton taught me so much about email accessibility. Tasha Booker M.ED taught me how to navigate the politics of organizations and leadership. To find myself now at the Trustees, surrounded by this talented sisterhood, is such a blessing.
