Time for an August Cardiac Mission Update! 🚑❤️ In the past two days we have witnessed many life-saving and pioneer procedures performed by the Heart Attack Ethiopia team. On August 19th, the team completed 11 procedures, including coronary angiography, PCI, and DVR. The team had done 3 ground breaking procedures in Ethiopia: micro aspiration catheter, LIMA to LAD stent anastomosis graft, and PRIMARY PCI within the golden hour. While on August 20, 2024, there were 8 procedures done. 6 of them were interventional cardiac procedures while 2 of them were open heart surgeries ( DVR and Mitral valve replacement). GIV-Ethiopia is proud to have recruited, trained, and deployed volunteers each day of the mission to maximize the impact of this initiative. Our medical professional volunteers have been actively participating in facilitating day to day activities. These activities included recording patients data pre-operatively, counseling for consent and translating for better communication. Follow us on our social media channels to see how our health professional volunteers are making a difference and to get real-time updates on the campaign! ❤ Stay tuned and support us as we drive change through volunteerism! #GIVSocietyEthiopia #HeartAttackEthiopia #HealthForAll #August2024

Big Takeaways from Yesterday's Cardiac Care Discussion in Ethiopia I had a powerful afternoon learning about the current state and future of cardiac care in Ethiopia! Huge thanks to YETENA WEG | የጤና ወግ Ethiopian Society of Cardiac Professionals MaxHealth for organizing this insightful session. The session began with a powerful presentation by the renowned Dr. Bekele Alemayehu (my and many cardiologists' icon). He unpacked the critical challenges of PCI in Ethiopia: limited access, high costs, delayed patient arrival, supply shortages, and a lack of both public awareness and government recognition. He also proposed solutions like: increased ministerial focus, public health education campaigns, and engaging pharmaceutical companies to improve the continuous supply of consumables. Adding to the urgency, there's a staggering backlog of over 14,000 patients waiting for cardiac intervention at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital alone. The future holds immense potential! Advancements showcased by 3 speakers from MAX Health Care highlight a 20-year gap Ethiopia needs to bridge. From minimally invasive cardiac surgery to percutaneous interventions for structural heart disease to innovative cardiac resynchronization therapies, the possibilities are vast. The Time to Act is Now: Public awareness campaigns and efficient referral systems are crucial to ensure Ethiopians recognize symptoms and seek early intervention. We must advocate for a more inclusive healthcare system, particularly in public hospitals where essential supplies are often scarce. This session sparked a fire within me. Let's work together to push for progress and ensure Ethiopians have access to the advanced cardiac care they deserve. #EthiopianHealthcare #CardiacCare #PublicHealth
