It’s Nonbinary Awareness Week! While it’s understandable to feel like “I want more than just awareness! I want CHANGE!” It’s important to remember that awareness for underrepresented and misunderstood communities is the beginning of change. We have to make people aware of our existence. We have to make them aware of our experience. Awareness has a use. It’s our springboard to more complex conversations and it’s how we walk toward structural and policy change.

• Women must step into power • Women want more connected networks… resources should be provided to enable them to change societies • We have to wage justice on gender equality issues • We can work in collective ways to amass great results, but we must come together to achieve that • In gender we need to be more organized, create more women’s networks, networks that help other women, networks that create opportunities to help other women into power • Women in the informal sector’s labour hasn’t been counted in the past, but value can be put on such labour • We must be the first to identify that need opportunities to be leaders in their societies then we would see lasting change • Stop saying it’s impossible! • If you leave this world better, having positively affected at least one person then is a life well lived “Hope is being able to see the light despite the darkness”

Gender-based violence is a tragic reality in every country in the world. However, it’s not always recognized. World Council of Churches’ campaign Thursdays in Black opposes all sexual and gender-based violence. This week the Thursdays in Black campaign was highlighted in the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland with an exhibition showing the Waterfall of Solidarity and Resistance tapestry, presenting posters and texts sent from different parts of the world. Exhibition was set up by Finn Church Aid and it can be shown in parishes around Finland. We all have a responsibility to speak out against violence.
