The UK’s biggest RTD brand in the on-trade category is bringing light to an otherwise gloomy outlook for RTD’s. Despite figures showing industry and category decline across on-trade channels, VK has adapted to changing late night conditions and is seeing strong growth of 22% in the pub sector. Those in the pub industry are showing resilience and adjusting to consumer wants and needs, bringing the party to daytime and pub with VK’s range of flavours offering variety in both individual drinks and cocktail serves. As we approach the end of Q3 2024, the alcohol industry landscape continues to evolve. Our latest analysis reveals some intriguing trends that are reshaping the market: 🥃 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆: While beer and wine face challenges, spirits have achieved positive growth in value (+0.3%) and volume (1.7%). However, this growth is primarily driven by Ready-to-Drink (RTD) beverages. 🏪 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: Convenience stores are emerging as a powerhouse, with a 1% increase in dollar sales. Mass merchandise and dollar clubs also perform well (+0.4%), while traditional liquor and grocery stores see declines. 🍹 𝗥𝗧𝗗𝘀 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: More than any other channel, 41% of RTD purchases occur in convenience stores. Recent legislation has made spirits-based RTDs increasingly available in these locations. 🥂 𝗟𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁: Liquor stores are increasing promotions to combat losses, bringing the average price per unit down 1.4% between January 2023 and August 2024. 🌎 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀: Each category is performing at different paces across the U.S. These trends highlight the importance of understanding regional preferences and the growing influence of convenience and RTDs in the alcohol market. A very good article in ft.com regarding the recent share price💲performance of the leading global alcohol 🍸 🍷 🥂 companies. Purveyors of alcoholic beverages have clearly had a terrible time of late. Shares in Diageo, Campari, Pernod Ricard and Rémy Cointreau are down between 20 and 40 per cent in the past 12 months. There is no shortage of good reasons. Diageo’s stumble is in part home-grown, given its stocking troubles in Latin America. Rémy Cointreau and Pernod Ricard have been hit by fears that China might impose tariffs on brandy. Most worrisome of all for companies across the sector is the fact that the US — the world’s most lucrative alcohol market — has gone into reverse, with spirit volumes down 3.3 per cent in 2023. However all this looks overly despondent. Despite current wobbles, selling alcoholic drinks remains a good business. When the Covid-era hangover finally clears, this will be a sector in which annual volumes grow by perhaps a couple of percentage points a year, prices rise and consumers increasingly choose premium drinks. We can all say cheers 🍸 to this! **this aricle is not investment advice** #alcohol #beverages #ft #financialtimes Lars Jensen Paul Villis Michel Aubanel Gilles Halotel Carol Dunne Jean Noel Ortal Jean-Philippe Delforge Kristof König Linda Chatton Stephen Rannekleiv Jim Watson Bourcard Nesin Francois Sonneville Virginia Traldi David Deeley Brian Short William Lynch Thomas Hahlin Ahlinder Sheelagh Pentony

Last piece of analysis about the RTD category explosion (from market research firm NIQ’s bev-alc team) Spirits In the spirits category, RTDs are driving significant changes. Without RTDs, spirits sales trends appear flat to declining. However, spirits-based RTDs are thriving and are bolstered by retail distribution and fluctuating local laws. The rise of premiumization and consumer moderation trends offers spirits brands opportunities to innovate with high-quality, unique products. The flavor explosion within RTDs, from classic cocktails to seasonal twists, appeals to consumers seeking diverse taste experiences, helping RTDs capture market share from traditional spirits. The success of spirits-based RTDs highlights the importance of flavor and convenience in driving consumer preferences. By offering ready-to-drink versions of popular cocktails, brands can tap into the growing demand for high-quality, convenient beverages. Ready Or Not: RTDs Detracting From Spirits Growth? The Future of RTDs The future of RTDs is promising. It’s brimming with potential for continued fragmentation and growth within the bev-alc industry. As consumers increasingly seek products that match their usage occasions and taste preferences, extended loyalty may be challenging to secure. However, this also opens up new avenues for innovation and market expansion. Retailers and brands must balance pricing and volume growth, ensuring that RTDs remain attractive and accessible while navigating rising costs. Ultimately, RTDs are not just a trend, but a transformative force reshaping the landscape of beverage alcohol, creating new opportunities and challenges. By staying attuned to consumer preferences and market dynamics, brands can harness the full potential of this burgeoning mega category. As the industry evolves, those who can innovate and adapt quickly will be best positioned to succeed in the dynamic RTD market.
