Roles for youth and the SDGs Critical thinkers: Part of being young involves making sense of personal experiences and asking questions about the world around you. Youth have the capacity to identify and challenge existing power structures and barriers to change, and to expose contradictions and biases Change-makers: Young people also have the power to act and mobilise others. Youth activism is on the rise the world over, bolstered by broader connectivity and access to social media. Innovators: In addition to bringing fresh perspectives, young people often have direct knowledge of and insights into issues that are not accessible to adults. Youth best understand the problems they face and can offer new ideas and alternative solutions. Communicators: Outside the international development sector, few people are aware that world leaders have come to a historic, far-reaching agreement to improve the lives of people and the planetby 2030. Young people can be partners in communicating the development agenda to their peers and communities at the local level, as well as across countries and regions. Leaders: When young people are empowered with the knowledge of their rights and equipped with leadership skills, they can drive change in their communities and countries. Youth-led organisations and networks, in particular, should be supported and strengthened, because they contribute to the development of civic leadership skills among young people, especially marginalised youth. https://lnkd.in/dgpECTN2

Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, we stand at the crossroads of potential—a place where dreams are not just figments of our imagination, but seeds of reality waiting to be nurtured. Development is not merely a technical term; it is the heartbeat of our society, the breath of progress that sustains our future. **Why do we strive for development?** Because we believe in a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. We envision communities where children are born into a legacy of prosperity, not poverty; where education is a right, not a privilege; where innovation is the norm, not the exception. **Development is about people.** It's about empowering each person to contribute their unique talents to the tapestry of civilization. It's about creating a society that values the contributions of all its members, regardless of their background or status. As we embark on this journey of development, let us remember that it is not the sole responsibility of governments or corporations, but a collective endeavor. Each one of us has a role to play. Whether you're a teacher inspiring the next generation, an entrepreneur creating jobs, or a citizen advocating for sustainable practices—you are the catalyst for change. Let us pledge to: - **Invest in our people,** for they are the architects of innovation. - **Champion equality,** because diversity is our strength, not our division. - **Safeguard our environment,** for it is the foundation upon which we build our future. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The future depends on what we do in the present." So, let us act with courage, let us act with vision, and let us act with unwavering determination. Together, we can forge a path of development that leads to a brighter, more inclusive world. Thank you.

Completing this course is first on my to do list in resourcing myself for my future in this sector.
Why, when we are in the postcolonial 21st century, are there still demands for decolonisation? In the second iteration of Dr Salmah Eva-Lina L.’s course “Conceptualising Decolonisation for Development”, this question is unpacked and examined from the perspective of the Majority World. The course objective is to enable the development of a common understanding between Majority and minority worlds of ‘decolonisation’, a word that has been used quite liberally across the international development sector. The course will start on 01 October, is podcast-based and listeners can work at their own pace. Enrollments are accepted on a rolling basis until May 2025. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gv2brbHj *Please note that although this course is titled Conceptualising Decolonisation for Development, the content is relevant to anybody from any sector who wishes to understand why decolonisation continues to be an issue not just for Majority World nations, but also for First Nations’ and other indigenous peoples. #decolonisation #internationaldevelopment #majorityworld #development Image: Philanthropy Australia/ https://lnkd.in/gxKh_Zxy
