Linguistic discrimination is still prevalent in classrooms across Central America. Every 14 days, one of the 7,000 known languages spoken worldwide dies. By the end of this century, half of these languages will disappear. Incorporating native languages into education helps to preserve children's cultural heritage and has shown to improve learning outcomes. Leonel Arguello, Director of Integrated School Feeding Programs for Global Communities, shares how UNIDOS, a McGovern-Dole Food for Education program in Guatemala, not only helps protect indigenous languages, but also promotes bilingual education and literacy. Today, we celebrate International Mother Language Day with the UN, a time to reflect on how language safeguards peace and understanding. The theme for this year is “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”. Multilingual societies rely on their varied languages to share and preserve knowledge sustainably. As more languages disappear and linguistic diversity becomes threatened, movements such as Anseye Pou Ayiti (APA), who advocate for mother language-based education, become more pivotal in sustaining the culture and innate strengths of their communities. APA’s commitment to preserving cultural identity by providing equitable education for the next generation of Haitian students is reflected in all aspects of the organization — from being a Haitian-grown and -led organization working with communities and its teachers to prioritizing the Kreyol language to address the influence of colonialism on their education system (see https://lnkd.in/gynGdJXi). APA CEO Nedgine Paul Deroly recognizes the importance of their advocacy for language diversity through education: "As the first Black republic, Haiti still has a major role in anti-racism and liberation efforts around the world... APA will be a model for all other countries where the education system remains a vestige of colonialism.” The preservation and education of languages is a continuous challenge, and through the efforts of organizations like Anseye Pou Ayiti, succeeding generations can cherish and learn from traditions and values passed on through their mother tongue. #AnseyePouAyiti #Haiti #Changemakers #ImpactStories #PeopleOfPurpose #dogood #InternationalMotherLanguageDay #EquitableEducation #UNESCO #SDG4 #SDG10 #SDG16 #InclusiveLanguage

The (academic) concept of intellectualising African languages, or rather previously marginalised indigenous languages, would seem as "scraping or doing away with English" to people who embrace (linguistic) historical practices that worship and hegemonise English and normalise monolingualism (in academia). The concept only advocates embracing African languages, and it must be important to emphasise that in order to achieve development as Africans, and to sustain this development, and keep our identity intact, we must intellectualise our African languages so that they compete with English in formal domains like academia, mass media, science and technology.

The International Mother Language Day highlights the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. In 2022, the FEC approved the adoption of the mother tongue as a compulsory medium of instruction in Primary Schools in the country. This will have a positive impact on early education as children can understand concepts and theories better. Language remains an effective tool for the communication of values, and customs and sustainably preserves traditional knowledge and cultures. #MotherLanguageDay #EdoBEST #sdg4 #educationforall
