The urgency of the climate crisis demands that we use every available tool in our toolbox—and that we wield them skillfully. In Michigan, we use tools like the working forests at our Wilderness Lakes Preserve. A newly released paper, led by Peter Ellis, TNC's Global Director of Natural Climate Solutions Science, outlines the guiding principles of natural climate solutions: nature-based, sustainable, climate-additional, measurable, and equitable. Together with efforts to phase out fossil fuels and transition to renewables, this knowledge is essential to unlock the full potential of nature and tackle climate change. As we push food production off land onto our oceans, and as we combat climate change, all while still producing responsibility managed seafood domestically here in the US, the future begs for careful and strategic efforts to balance so many competing interests and pressures on our oceans. The US Sustainable Ocean Plan is just that. Shout out to Dr. Jane Lubchenco and US Ocean Panal team for developing this essential piece of work to chart the next chapter. Sustainable Ocean Plans, pioneered by the #OceanPanel, are setting the stage for meaningful action that benefits people, nature and climate. Today I had the pleasure of sharing some insights of what is required to decarbonize the maritime sector at New York Climate Week at the We Don't Have Time talkshow together with Johan Svendsen and Daniel Barcarolo. Unfortunately there is nothing like a magic wand, just “fixing it” so several things need to happen “in orchestra” to decarbonize the maritime ecosystem and it might seem impossible. But it is only impossible if we allow it to be impossible! The 4 things that need to happen and that the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, are working intensivly on through innovative research and collaboration with our partners are: - Alternative fuels at scale - Wider adoption of energy efficiency measures - Policies, regulations and new business frameworks - And finally we need to show the world that it is possible through demonstration projects like the Green Corridors Nicholas (Nick) Nuttall Didde Welin Rasmus Baastrup Nielsen Roberto Lago Mortensen Johanne Lundgaard-Karlshøj Mira Bergem Bo Cerup-Simonsen #ClimateWeekNYC #ZeroCarbonShipping #NetZero #GreenCorridors

Join us tomorrow, Thursday July 25th, for Carbon Neutral Coffee! We'll come together at 7:45am at our new location - Southern Market in Lancaster (100 S. Queen St.) - to connect, inspire, and collectively advance sustainability solutions. This meetup's featured speaker will be local author Cliff Lewis, a Lancaster-based author of a climate-themed young adult book, We the Future. "The debut novel by Cliff Lewis is a compelling introduction to climate science for any young reader unlikely to binge-read the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," according to his website. "But, at its heart, We the Future is about more than the climate. It's about the practical steps that everyday kids can take to organize themselves for real world change." Cliff will be sharing about his background, why he chose to write a climate novel for young people, and how they've been responding to these themes and conversations. It will be a good chance to engage someone with a unique window into how the next generation is thinking about climate change. As always, we'll have plenty of time for questions and conversation. Join us this Thursday at 7:45am at Southern Market for this exciting session of Carbon Neutral Coffee with Cliff Lewis! Note: when you arrive at Southern Market, enter on Vine Street to the right of the main doors. Let us know you're coming on Meetup: https://lnkd.in/evPGH5WD And learn more about Cliff on his website: www.heyclifflewis.com. p.s... Registration for the Science to Policy Summit closes next Friday, May 10! The Summit will take place at Lacamas Lake Lodge on Wednesday, May 15, on the topic of "Conservation as climate mitigation: Using carbon programs to protect and restore ecosystems." Virtual attendance is also available. Carbon programs create financial incentives to reduce emissions and have the potential to be integrated into a variety of conservation and restoration programs. At the Science to Policy Summit 2024, carbon program business leaders, resource managers, researchers, and restoration practitioners will share the latest research on carbon sequestration, how carbon programs are currently operating, and how they are evolving to meet new restoration and conservation initiatives. Register: https://lnkd.in/gDpEN8z6 We're also offering FREE lunchtime paddles on the Estuary Partnership's two Big Canoes with members of our Education Team. The Estuary Partnership initiated the Science to Policy Summit series in 2007 to expand the dialog among scientists, natural resource professionals and community leaders within the region. This will be the first recurrence of the Summit since 2019.
