Earth Day 2024 is a day to highlight feminist climate justice activists across the world. Global Fund for Women supports activists and movements working toward climate justice. But what is climate justice? 🌊 Climate justice centers the lived realities and grounded knowledge of communities most impacted by—and least responsible for—the climate crisis, such as rural and Indigenous communities and those in countries recovering from long histories of extraction, colonialism, and military conflict. 🌍 Climate justice is grounded in intersectionality, recognizing that the struggle for a just and sustainable future is deeply connected to struggles for racial justice, gender justice, immigration justice, and so many more. 🔥 Climate justice is intergenerational, centering the voices of young people who are rallying for their own sustainable futures and fostering solidarity with older generations. 🌱 Climate justice resists Band-Aid solutions and emphasizes addressing the root causes of injustice. Keep your notifications on this week—we will be featuring feminist climate justice movements and activists who are leaders with solutions to the unequal effects of the climate crisis.

We, along with the other Urgent Action Funds, believe that while we respond to crises at the intersections of gender, climate, and democracy, these overlap in dramatic ways to make matters worse for human rights defenders worldwide. In the last two years alone, our overall support to Environmental and Climate Justice defenders expanded significantly. In 2023, we offered 66 grants worth $330k (marking a 150% year on year increase) to ECJ Defenders in 18 countries. 25% of these grantees were also LBTQ+ activists. The surge in the need for rapid response grants is not surprising, and at best, show us the state of the world. As we continue to learn about the diverse social movements pushing for a (feminist) regeneration of our planet and its people, five critical learnings emerge — highlighted in our latest blog 🌿 https://lnkd.in/dd6jsiAu Written by Vinita Sahasranaman Artwork by Griselda Gabriele #environmentprotection #climateaction #climatecrisis #feministactivism #resilience #climateemergency #climatejustice #savetheplanet #activists

On this International Youth Day, we reject the performative gestures that tokenize our presence in climate justice spaces. As Climate Sirens, young women and girls from SWANA refuse to be passive participants in the fight for our planet’s future. We have been on the frontlines, leading social and climate justice movements, preserving our earth, and repairing the damage inflicted by corporations, oligarchs, and those in power. It is time to decolonize climate justice spaces and amplify the voices of those most affected yet most unheard. Our leadership is not optional; it is essential. Our voices will no longer be silenced or sidelined. We are here to dismantle oppressive systems and build a future rooted in justice, equity, and sustainability for all. #ClimateJustice #YouthDay #SWANAResilience

When it comes to revolutionizing what's possible in the climate justice space, our team is the backbone that allows us to uplift and support our frontline grantee partners. Read below to learn more about our incredible Digital Strategist, Ena Coleman. "I dream of a future where systemic racism is dismantled, where justice is truly blind and accessible to all. I hope for a future defined by love, unity, and empowerment. Where we come together across lines of difference to build bridges of understanding and solidarity. And where every individual, regardless of their race, gender, or background, is empowered and equipped to fulfill their potential and live a life of dignity and purpose." "These are my hopes for creating the future we all deserve—a future where equality, justice, and opportunity are not just ideals, but realities for all." #TheSolutionsProject #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions

✨ Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant 🌏 I support initiatives and organisations in including socially disadvantaged groups, starting from gender and disability, in internal operations and external engagements.
✨ Climate justice and social justice are two facets of the same issue🌏 Climate justice addresses inequalities worsened by environmental impacts. Social justice tackles systemic disparities that climate change exacerbates. They require inclusive approaches to address systemic inequalities and vulnerabilities. Commoning current initiatives address both. Two projects are dedicated to advancing disability-inclusive climate action and advocating for legislative changes. A Commoning benchmark maps existing tools to better understand one’s social positioning, privileges and oppressions. Together, these efforts contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future. 👉 The whole Commoning's equinox newsletter is available on its blog: https://lnkd.in/eeYXsNDU #SocialJustice #ClimateJustice #Inclusion #DisabilityRights #Intersectionality

CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation's annual State of Civil Society report includes an update on activism by gender equality and LGBTQI+ movements in 2023. While progress is celebrated in a few key places (decriminalization of same-sex relations in Mauritius, marriage equality in Estonia and Greece, etc.), "These gains brought brutal backlash that has all but halted further progress. In 2023, women’s and LGBTQI+ movements had to devote increasing efforts to defending rather than expanding rights...The Taliban strengthened its grip in Afghanistan, theocracy reasserted itself in Iran, Russia deepened its anti-LGBTQI+ crackdown, extreme anti-gay laws were passed in Ghana and Uganda and anti-trans hysteria mushroomed in the US. Supported by powerful conservative foundations, anti-rights movements are much better funded than their progressive counterparts, and have coopted human rights language to shift the narrative. But activists across the world continue to resist oppression. While it’s been a disappointing year for gender rights movements, the situation would have been much worse without their enormous efforts." The implications of this research and call to action are clear: women and LGBTIQ civil society activists and movements need much more support to continue protecting human rights and advancing social and legal progress around the world.

One of the most forward looking documents that governments and NGOs should read. Lots of takeaways for future action and state-of-the-art feminist thinking and reflection. Wonderful to have been a part of this!
