Sweden and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on climate cooperation under the Paris Agreement! In parallel with negotiating a binding bilateral agreement regulating transactions of internationally transferable mitigation outcomes, there are also discussions about what kind of mitigation activities the Swedish Energy Agency can support in Zambia. Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency, says: "Together with our partner organisations, we aim to develop projects that provide large emissions reductions and at the same time affect the energy system in the country positively in the long term. It is also important that our efforts benefit the local communities and contribute to sustainable development." Today in Bonn, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UN Climate Change, UN Biodiversity, and UN Convention to Combat Desertification launched 'Seeking Synergy Solutions: Four Thematic Reports' by the Expert Group on Climate and Sustainable Development Goals Synergy. Convened by the UN, this expert group includes us, Future Africa UP, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), UK Research and Innovation, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and UrbanBetter. The report on accelerating action through policy frameworks is co-thematically led by Måns Nilsson, SEI Executive Director and co-authored by Adis Dzebo, SEI Senior Research Fellow. Countries are off track on sustainable development and missing key SDG and Paris Agreement targets. According to Nilsson, this new report guides senior officials on integrating climate and sustainability plans, emphasizing synergy with practical examples and tools. Starting in early 2025, Parties to the Paris Agreement will submit more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions. Dzebo notes this is a chance to boost domestic sustainable development and climate efforts. These four thematic reports will contribute to the 2024 Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergy that will be launched during the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York in July. The goal is for the report to play a major role in discussions at the Fifth Global Climate and SDG Synergy Conference, set for September 5-6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The President of the Republic of Seychelles and the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde co-hosted the High-Level Dialogue Leveraging Partnerships for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Finance, co-organized by Seychelles as chair of the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC), alongside the other African Island States, ECA, Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), and various partners. This event took place during the 4th International Conference of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, from May 27th to 30th. The event brought together Ministers from the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and South China Sea (AIS) regions of the SIDS, as well as major stakeholders, including directors from the Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, and Global Environment Facility. Also present were the Vice President of The World Bank, State Secretaries from Germany and Portugal, and Special Envoys for SIDS from the European Union, United Kingdom, and United States, along with several senior UN officials. The President of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, emphasized the need to consider the vulnerabilities of SIDS as criteria for accessing funding. “Having a good development track does not mean being less vulnerable, and therefore there is a need for fair access to climate finance,” he stated. “Today, we embark on a pivotal conversation aimed at harnessing the power of collaboration, innovation, and strategic financing to bolster our collective resilience and propel sustainable development across our island nations. We recognize that no single entity, government, or organization can confront the climate crisis alone. Instead, it demands a concerted effort, a unified vision, coordinated action, and robust partnerships forged across borders and sectors,” he concluded. The Prime Minister of Cabo Verde, Mr. Ulisses Correia e Silva, highlighted the importance of operationalizing the loss and damage fund, particularly in response to natural disasters that severely impact the vulnerable economies of SIDS. He stressed the significant role of instruments such as the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index and debt swaps for climate, which can provide SIDS with the necessary means to achieve sustainable development. “These tools are essential for unlocking substantial resources and fostering investments that build long-term resilience in our states, necessitating immediate action to be effective,” he added. Especially looking forward to the new synergies between climate action and economic modernisation. Even only in Belgium climate investments are estimated at 415 billion. With an ageing population putting pressure on both productivity and government expenditures, as well as a pressing public debt, a successful transition will very much depend on the degree to which we can ensure that our climate investments deliver a return in economic growth. As well as the degree to which we are able to maintain a balance, with our policy interventions, between the growth in demand and supply on the (climate technology) market. I never imagined seeing my article published in a journal ranked among the top globally (currently #7 among 187 journals listed in the Web of Science for political science), but here we are 😊 As the #EU discusses the transformation to a carbon-neutral economy and seeks strategic partnerships with countries abundantly equipped with natural resources, incl. the widely discussed critical raw minerals, we have decided, along with Mohamed Jaouad MALZI, to explore the EU's efforts to secure its own green future by delving deeper into the perceptions of key Moroccan stakeholders regarding a new initiative signed between the EU and Morocco, i.e., the Green Partnership on #Energy, #Climate and #Environment. This new deal is considered a model by the EU on how to advance its new strategic partnerships with other countries. But as our results indicate, there are numerous issues that need to be further discussed so that the #EU secures its own green future without risking being considered a climate colonizer in the region. Ms. Becker emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that it not only underscores Germany's dedication to global climate action but also provides Pakistan with critical support and resources to enhance its climate resilience and energy infrastructure. The PGCEP program is expected to drive substantial progress in both countries' efforts to achieve their environmental goals, fostering a sustainable future through joint initiatives and shared expertise.
