🌍 🐦 Ahead of this year's World Migratory Bird Day, we invite you to explore the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Natural Reserve in Saudi Arabia, the host country of our next Conference of the Parties – UNCCD COP16. Covering a total area of 130,700 square kilometers, it is the largest nature reserve in the Kingdom, serving as a sanctuary for nearly 290 bird species and providing as a vital stopover for migratory birds, giving them food and shelter on their long journeys. Established in 2018, it is a member of IUCN and is managed by the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority to protect endangered species by developing natural habitats, raising environmental awareness among the public and reducing natural and human threats to the area. UNCCD is the global voice for land. We champion healthy, productive and accessible land for all #UNited4Land
Info
Our lives depend on land. Healthy land feeds, shelters and clothes us. It sustains our planet’s vital ecosystems, preserves biodiversity and plays a fundamental and increasingly urgent role in mitigating climate change. When land has been degraded by human intervention or plagued by drought, it loses its capacity to sustain life with dire consequences. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the global vision and voice for land. We unite governments, scientists, policymakers, private sector and communities around a shared vision and global action to restore and manage the world’s land for the sustainability of humanity and the planet. Much more than an international treaty signed by 197 parties, UNCCD is a multilateral commitment to mitigating today’s impacts of land degradation and advancing tomorrow’s land stewardship in order to provide food, water, shelter and economic opportunity to all people in an equitable and inclusive manner. Abundant healthy land fosters our collective wellbeing and resilience, and can enable all people to live on a safe, just and prosperous planet. #UNited4Land

UN Convention to Combat Desertification hat dies direkt geteilt
At the #G20 meeting of environment ministers in Rio de Janeiro, one pressing issue stood out: #land degradation and #drought. These challenges, which affect productivity and human well-being, are no longer limited to developing countries. Countries rich in mineral and agricultural resources continue to struggle with the consequences of outdated economic models. Traditional extractive economic systems, where raw materials are exported, processed abroad, and reimported leave little value-added in local economies. These models deepen inequality and economic instability, especially in countries where natural resources should, in theory, be engines of growth. The time has come for the G20 to champion a shift towards circular economies that prioritize sustainability, equity, and added value on the ground. A model that tackles resource depletion, reduces waste, and strengthens local economies is crucial. It's encouraging that South Africa, the incoming G20 presidency, has already signaled its commitment to combating desertification and drought. This is an important step forward, recognizing that healthy, productive land is not only the foundation for economic growth, but also for social and environmental resilience. The task ahead is clear: we must reshape our economic models and put land restoration at the core of our global agenda. Let’s use this momentum to drive sustainable change, ensuring a better future for all.
