Toyota North America and Redwood Materials on Thursday announced plans to expand upon their existing #batteryrecycling agreement for Toyota's end-of-life #EVbatteries. The latest agreement is aimed at creating pathways for end-of-life EV batteries used in Toyota's battery #electricvehicles and #hybridvehicles. The plan also includes Toyota sourcing Cathode Active Materials and anode copper foil from Redwood's recycling activities back into its #batterysupplychain. Battery recycling is a critical part of our journey towards a more #sustainable future. Closed Cycle Recycling: After a battery's second life phase or following an accident, we set out to recycle its materials in a closed cycle. Valuable elements like nickel, cobalt, and lithium are recovered and flow into the production of new batteries. Mechanical & Hydrometallurgical Process: Our recycling process involves a mechanical phase where batteries are disassembled, and recyclable materials are separated from plastics and magnetic metals. The 'black mass' obtained from this stage is then processed through a chemical hydrometallurgical process to extract the valuable materials. Circular Economy Commitment: #TRATON and our brands are dedicated to supporting the circular economy – together with six recycling partners in Europe. We re-use old and defective high-voltage batteries for buses, trucks, and vans, extending their lifecycles. Nissan and Ecobat Solutions UK Ltd have partnered to give used electric vehicle (EV) batteries a second life in the UK. This collaboration focuses on repurposing Nissan LEAF batteries from retired electric vehicles, exploring ways to recover, repair, and recycle them. The goal is to establish a sustainable circular energy economy. Nissan, a leader in the UK's EV market, combines its battery expertise with Ecobat's recycling capabilities. This partnership explores how to safely transport, dismantle, and repurpose EV batteries, possibly offering a manufacturer warranty for second-life products. Aligned with Nissan's carbon neutrality goal by 2050, the project aims to ensure sustainability throughout the EV lifecycle. Ecobat's Darlaston facility near Birmingham is where used batteries are assessed, with engineers evaluating safety and performance. Batteries that meet the standards are repurposed for energy storage or mobile power charging systems, while those that don't are recycled. Ecobat’s UK Diagnostic and Disassembly Centre has processed over 6,000 batteries since 2021.
