It’s easy to get lost in the hype when investing whether you are investing in public companies or two founders in a garage. At Raise last week, my partner Nick Talwar shared how K50 Ventures has driven top-decile returns and material impact for millions of small businesses and middle-class consumers. See post below 👇 and check out Raise if you are an emerging manager or LP looking to build a venture portfolio; it was by far the best conference of the year. As Nick mentioned, it’s hard to stay focused and ahead of the curve as a thematic investor. At K50, we rely on our three pillars to drive our investment process: 1. Outcomes-driven - We exclusively invest in products that benefit middle-class consumers and small businesses. Our specialized approach enables us to cut through the noise and concentrate on the unmet needs founders are solving for this population rather than the schools they went to, the investors already in the round, or the small amount of potentially misleading traction they already have. 2. High conviction - We aim to lead (price the round, be the first to say yes, and typically the biggest check in an investment round) so we primarily take meetings in areas we've researched where we can add significant value. We focus on underwriting the problem, the founders and their founder/problem fit, and the market. We spend at least 3-4 weeks with any individual company and typically many months if it’s a brand new space for us. If we really like the team but less familiar with the problem or market, we may invest a smaller "scout check" ($50-100k) always with intent to lead in future rounds. 3. Bellwether and contrarian - We aim for outsized returns by identifying untapped/undertapped themes before they become mainstream. If you are just starting to investigate AI now, Web3 or NFTs in 2021, or drones 6-7 years ago, you would have been investing into the hype cycle and paying high prices. It pays to either be early investing the time and energy before the hype is there or wait until the hype cycle is over to redefine the theme once the market has settled or moved on. In order to re-energize the capital markets, we educate media and co-investors on these opportunities through events, content, and our memos (typically people keep this private) to inform and build momentum.
