Many people assume that prioritizing space for cars is the best way to draw business—after all, people usually drive when they’re shopping and dining, right? Turns out this perception is often inaccurate. For example, merchants surveyed along York Boulevard in Los Angeles assumed their customers arrived by car (60% to 70%), but only 15% to 30% of customers surveyed reported they arrived by car. More than half reported they walk or bike to the businesses. The City of Medford conducted a study on the impact of increased bicycle and pedestrian access on business, which led to findings that point to the economic benefits of active transportation facilities. The City applied these insights by implementing a bike lane that's making their downtown more connected, accessible, and vibrant. ➡️ Learn more about the City of Medford's multimodal reconfiguration here: https://lnkd.in/gHpJDbB4

Brentioch & Crieve Hall: 54% of your survey responses cited traffic/congestion as the “worst” of the negative aspects of our city, and we’re taking seriously your goals for a better future. 78% said the #1 goal is to “make it easier to get around Nashville—to and from downtown and from one place to another in the region, while 50% said Nashville must “ensure everyone has good access to downtown and the important parts of the region—make transportation options equally accessible to all.” Nashville: Do you agree?

I don’t often comment on municipal politics here but as an avid public transit user in Toronto, my home of more than twenty years, I can’t help but notice the absymal state of the TTC - which seems to have greatly deteriorated over the two years I was away. And we are now garnering some global attention for it. Singapore’s subway - or MRT - is safe, clean, on-time, accessible, affordable, and expansive. In a city-state with the same population as the GTA, It features 3x as many lines, and glass safety doors at every station, preventing uncessary death and injury. I have also spent time in Bogota, a city the author mentions, which not only has a world class transit system that anyone would want to travel on, it has also invested in a cable car that reaches high up into the city slums so that residents from all walks of life can get where they need to efficiently, at a low cost. And yes, I rode the cable with my son, and it was safe, clean and had friendly, helpful service. A world class city like Toronto - which I truly believe it is - deserves a public transit-first investment approach. Eliminating bike lanes is certainly a step backwards, as is any investment that isn’t putting mass transit needs front and centre. But public transit needs public support and I know far too many of us are those single passengers complaining to oursleves alone behind the wheel. What has long been a private family joke amongst cousin 416’ers and 905’ers is now being globally broadcast by celebrities - maybe it’s exactly the public shaming we need to finally put aside our individual desires and support, vote and behave in ways that are truly good for our city, economy and planet.✌🏼🚴 🚇 🌏
On a recent warm summer evening in downtown Toronto, a thirty-year-old, able-bodied man walked roughly five minutes to work. Niall Horan being unable to drive to his destination wasn’t embarrassing. His alternative options were. #Opinion Niall H. Anna Fitzpatrick

Keynote & TEDx Speaker | Consultant | Joy-bringer 🔅Helping teams & leaders solve conflict, cultivate communication, & create Joyosity™ — positive culture with complex people so engagement is high & you retain employees.
The root of crappy leadership is fear. Over eggs, toast, and coffee this morning, Asim and I talked about what it takes to gather a group of people and get them moving toward a positive, unified goal. Clearly one of his strengths because he's done several times in his career, Asim reminded me of the power of understanding the collective benefit of working together when we just decide that's what we're going to do. I saw many examples of bravery, excitement, and success from his experiences. (As a part of our chat, he shared this article from Steve Smith in the St. Louis Business Journal as a response to a The Wall Street Journal article on STL.) These regional issues are the same issues I see within many organizations. They're because a leader and/or group of people are operating from a place of fear. Fear keeps people and organizations not just stagnant, but eventually dry and dusty places where life used to be. What is one practical way you take action to solve problems as a leader? What is the impact you’ve noticed?
"My partners and I have resisted recent pressure from our own employees to “move west” because we want to be part of the solution to some of the challenges of our region, in this case a vibrant downtown." 🖊 Steve Smith, CEO of Lawrence Group & New + Found ⤵

Liverpool is a vibrant and diverse city. It’s important we say that because we cannot allow violence to undo and undermine the work that has been done to build and regenerate a city. The modern Liverpool is the culmination of a lot of work by many different partners. It is the result of vision, investment confidence and hard work. We have made the decision to postpone Celebrating Bold Street this coming weekend, after we took the decision on Saturday to postpone Celebrating Castle Street. After speaking to our businesses we feel this is the sensible course of action. The city centre is a place for everyone to enjoy, but we feel it is prudent as the situation remains unpredictable. At Liverpool BID Company we have always said our work is about making this a city where everyone can thrive, be they resident, business, visitor or tourist. The resilience of our city centre businesses in the face of violence and threats cannot be understated. Our businesses showed real love and strength in protecting their customers and staff. The truth is they shouldn’t have to show such strength and be so concerned about their staff and customers. This shouldn’t happen. What do we need to do in the coming days, weeks and months? We need a frank conversation about what happened on Saturday and why both businesses, shoppers and visitors of all ages were subject to a dangerous situation. Criminal and violent activity on this scale should not be something our city has to tolerate. As a voice for and a partner with those who have businesses and organisations within the city centre it is so important to make sure we can communicate quickly and effectively. We will push forward with the city partners, Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council to provide regular and clear communication, ensuring our city can run as openly and safely as possible. We have come through difficult times together before. All we know is how to work together, and that is what we will continue to do. - Bill Addy Chief Executive, Liverpool BID Company → https://lnkd.in/encnBecU

Your Business = Britain's Best Kept Secret #2 Whitley Bay, a charming seaside town, serves as a perfect analogy for your business. While it may not boast the glitz and glamour of London, it offers a serene and fulfilling life. Similarly, your business may not have all the flashy attractions, but it provides everything necessary for a seamless and enjoyable experience. Whitley Bay thrives on its strong community and essential amenities. Just like this town, your business caters to the needs of its clients without burdening them with excessive charges for unnecessary features. Instead, you focus on delivering exceptional service and ensuring customer satisfaction, much like Whitley Bay's renowned ice-cream parlors, fish and chips shops, and sports clubs. Your business doesn't need to be widely recognized like London; it simply needs to be known by the right people. By offering the right products or services, you can create a niche market that appreciates and values what you provide. Just as Whitley Bay's allure lies in its simplicity and offering of the right things, your business can thrive by delivering precisely what your target audience desires. You don't need to be known by everyone, you just need to be known by the right people at the right time. #culture #ceo #business #management #britainsbestkeptsecret #whitleybay #northtyneside
