Sikorsky, a pioneer in aviation technology, is leading the charge in developing cutting-edge vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aerial systems (VTOL/UAS). Currently, Sikorsky is conducting flight tests to refine the control laws and aerodynamics of a revolutionary VTOL/UAS design. This novel aircraft configuration, featuring a twin proprotor 'rotor blown wing,' promises enhanced efficiency and scalability. By seamlessly transitioning from vertical to horizontal flight, it is poised to revolutionize long-endurance missions, including intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting. These flight tests support Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s Ancillary initiative, aiming to develop a versatile Class 3 UAS VTOL X-Plane capable of operating in various weather conditions and terrains, without the need for infrastructure. Igor Cherepinsky, Director of Sikorsky Innovations, underscores the significance of this endeavor in advancing 21st-century security technologies. He highlights key features such as the MATRIX autonomy flight control system and an articulated rotor system, critical for flight maneuverability and scalability. Sikorsky's commitment to innovation is evident in its rigorous testing of a proof-of-concept vehicle, powered by a battery. Future plans include the development of a hybrid-electric version, equipped with an ISR payload, for potential deployment in upcoming ANCILLARY phases. I had the pleasure of representing the MIT AI Accelerator and leading discussions at the sUAS Swarming Workshop hosted by AFWERX and in collaboration with Air Force Special Operations (AFSOC), US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), Georgia Tech Research Institute and DAF-Stanford AI Studio with the aim to advance the Adaptive Airborne Enterprise. The Adaptive Airborne Enterprise (A2E) is a crucial AFSOC and USSOCOM initiative to meet intelligence requirements in high end conflicts leveraging smaller platforms at scale through a family of autonomous tiered unmanned aerial aircraft and traditional assets. This vision maximizes human bandwidth and decision making through robust human-machine teaming which diverges from the traditional system of a single crew operating a single platform with a complement of support element and instead enables a crew to operate multiple tiered platforms to swiftly meet intelligence collection objectives and providing decision makers the crucial edge in dynamic contested and denied environments. As our force draws closer to fielding A2E, it is imperative to leverage the capabilities and innovation of industry and academia to research, develop, test and evaluate operational and technical requirements. Equally as important is to foster these relationships and build partnerships. This workshop enabled this crucial intersection and opened the aperture for continued collaboration as A2E moves toward.
