The impact of the February 2023 Kahramanmaraş #earthquakes in #Türkiye was devastating, affecting 9.1 million people (OCHA) and causing massive building and infrastructure damage across a wide area, with significant urban and peri urban impact (close to 900,000 residential units moderately or severely damaged, and 1.8 million lightly-damaged residential units [AFAD]). The earthquakes resulted in outright disruption of life and mass displacement of the affected households (3.6 million people) who were left in sub-zero temperatures, during the peak of winter, and in critical need of emergency shelter assistance and immediate support to resume their domestic functions at even a basic level. Following the formal scale-up activation of the humanitarian clusters, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC convened the Shelter Sector (February to December 2023) and mobilized humanitarian partners to respond to the large-scale shelter needs of the affected population in coordination with the Government of Türkiye. How can locally- led Anticipatory Humanitarian Action help reduce humanitarian needs and suffering? 🤔 Hazards have always been affecting communities, and they have consistently sought ways to protect themselves. But hazards are becoming more frequent and severe, presenting escalating challenges. ⚠️ How can we support communities in enhancing their own strategies to better protect themselves from the impacts of hazard? 💪 Through community-led Anticipatory Humanitarian Action which includes: 1️⃣ acknowledging local knowledge and experience in managing these risks as crucial, 2️⃣ providing communities with adequate time by developing models and systems that can predict hazards and their impacts, 3️⃣ setting up early warning systems and guaranteed funding arrangements so that actions can be taken before damage occurs and lives are lost. 4️⃣ in collaboration with local communities, developing contingency plans that can be roll-out upon the issuance of an early warning. Anticipatory humanitarian action is crucial in mitigating the impact of natural disasters, especially in vulnerable areas like IDP camps. Implementing early warning mechanisms can indeed provide valuable time for humanitarian actors to intervene effectively. Have you considered proposing specific programs or strategies to address this issue in NW Syria? It might be helpful to collaborate with NGOs and local authorities to develop comprehensive plans tailored to the region's needs.
